Are you ready for a diesel M? 550dXM
Well, it doesn't look like we'll get a 535d, but instead BMW plans to send us a high performance diesel in the 5 series body. AWD, staggering power: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=573702

Typical BMW. Make a big deal of efficiency, and only bring the top of the line diesel instead of the economical one... We want BMW to make a 6 liter twin turbo V12 diesel like the Audi does. That's the ultimate engine for efficiency (in bizarro world).

broken link, but I found another part on our forum:
http://www.bimmerpost.com/2011/08/17...dxm-confirmed/ but, I would seriously consider it. All the numbers are in place, near 500hp 500+ torque, fuel efficiency, as long as they can make the weight less than 4000lbs, I'll seriously consider it.

a) Story already big news on BIMMERPOST front page
b) This is not coming to the US, not instead of a 535d, and not along with a 535d either c) There are plenty of M badged diesels already throughout the world. These are M Sport equipped diesel powered series cars. This new M550d will probably be a little more than that, but it isn't as if it is literally an M5 diesel. And it will definitely differ in looks from an M5 too. d) Diesels are cool. If not a high revving motor, I'll take a diesel. e) I love that BMW is getting big power from a diesel I6, since it means even bigger power from a gasonline I6 f) There's something stuck in your tooth - go check a mirror.

I'm glad to see that BMW is expanding their technical base. Putting a "tuned by M" diesel motor in a 5-series with the suspension/brakes of an M5 package would be a truly unique beast on the road.
It might not beat the gas engine on a track time wise, but that torque and suspension package for street drivability would be intoxicating. And I'd be willing to bet a smaller percentage of M5's hit the track than M3's. Sadly it would only be an enthusiast's desire in the US hence it won't be sought after enough to justify importing. But if they did it would be 100% the replacement for my E90 in 5-7 years when I'm really ready to move on to another car. |
