If you are coming from a 6MT to a DCT is feels so much quicker. I drove a Manual M3 for about 6 months. I traded it for DCT and the car honestly feels 2X as fast.

But I love how some call the non-ZCP M3s "Civic M3s". Interesting how BMW makes so few M3s in general compared to most other sports cars.

DCT is so MUCH better than 6MT all around, I just don't know why its offered. Its like buying a porsche 911 GT3 and using 87 octane gas with 185 tires with it.

DCT will be always faster and more "involved"

Like those formula cars....

hmmmmmmmm weird why is it then that the gt3 is only offered with the manual? maybe its a true involvement, visceral thing you wouldnt understand.

The car that Car & Driver used for the 3.9 second 0-60 run was equipped with Pilot Sport 2s. Did early year M3s come with different tires? I think that sticker tires, updated DCT software and a warmer day could result in a slight improvement in times. You also have to remember that if you are going from a three year old car to a brand new one. A car with 30- to 40,000 miles will drive differently than a car fresh from its 1,200 mile service. Just my 2 cents

Edit: Why do people always end up talking about DCT vs 6MT? I'm glad they are both offered so people don't have to compromise when they are buying a $70,000 car. If you want DCT, get it. If you want manual, get it. I love both. Additionally, there are people (like me) who want F1 to go back to full manuals, less aero and less rules so we can see who the best driver is and not who has the best wind tunnel but these are two completely separate topics. Stop flooding threads with useless posts and ideas.

They should come up with some sort of 2 in 1 transmission. Push a button and a clutch slowly descends for some 3 pedal action. Then when u feel like letting the computer take over with lighting fast deadly precise shifts just push the button again and enjoy the best of both worlds

The issue I think is the DCT. Not only does it make the car faster because of shifting, I have read that the gearing has changed. This could also be a big part of what you are feeling... the DCT gearing does, IMO, make the car feel more torquey and fast and revs more quickly but very likely just because of gearing. So, unlike what others might think, I do NOT believe you are experiencing a placebo effect but simply noticing the faster shifting of the DCT (vs 6MT) and the more aggressive gearing (torque to the wheels).

So, the engine is the same but the transmission makes the car feel very different. I would expect that if you compared a 2008 6MT and 2008 DCT you would have the same/similar impression.

On the handling/ZCP issue, it is hard to say if I notice any real difference... maybe slightly but only very slightly if at all. What you might be feeling is the stiffness of a new suspension versus a 3 year old suspension IMO.

For the "sound" of the engine, I also noticed that it seemed louder. At the first HPDE of the season, my car had a much more distinct intake/exhaust note. One of the flag guys is the head BMW tech for the local dealership. He is convinced that BMW did something to the cars to increase intake/exhaust sound as he has noticed the difference of several M3s. The other M3 guys also commented that my car sounded very different than the other e9x M3s there on the front straight at WOT. I originally thought maybe I had something wrong with the car (maybe a small exhaust leak) but I have now heard others make similar comments on their 2011s so maybe there was a tweak to the sound?
