Advices on getting 08' M3

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the forums so nice to meet all of you!

I've been looking for a new car lately, my first performance sports car and I have researched a lot on used C63 AMG until recently when I fell in love with the looks and performance of the M3. The C63 also have very high maintenance cost, especially tires which will only last like 10,000 miles before needing to be replaced even if you just do city driving.

Right now I'm looking at used 2008/2009 BMW M3s and I would just like to hear some advice in the cost of ownership and difference between the model years.

My budget is between 45-50k and I've found one online with the following specs:
2008 E92 M3
Color black
DCT transmisison
~48000 miles
price $40k

That seems like a great deal to me but I just started searching, is that around market value or something seems fishy?

Thanks in advance!

ok first of all 48k miles is way to much !
and keep in mind that with 08 you are about to be out of warranty and maintenance vey soon. (actually, in 2000 miles)
so if i am you,i will be looking for 09 with some 30k miles and pay around 45k for it.
you also get the new navigation with the late 09 models.
I jus got 2010 with premium and tech package, with 22k miles for $ 52k
look around and get a CPO.
good luck

If the mileage doesn't scare you (and being out of warranty in 2k miles), go for it - but the value of that car is high $30s, not $40k. I think you can find an 08 with lower miles without spending too much more than that. Have a look in the classified section on this site. There are a couple of 08s in there that look pretty good.

Spend more and get one with as low mileage as possible; it'd be money well spent, believe me . I decided to keep mine, but as a reference, has 8K miles and EVERY option, and wanted $47K, with 2 years of warranty left, and original owner. I'd also try to buy from original owner, even if it takes you longer to find one. Oh, and try to buy from a mature owner, and NOT an off-lease, as owners rarely take as good care of a lease than their own car (for obvious reasons). Good luck.

There's a nice space grey one at Long Beach I just dropped off. Not many options, but the engine is solid and did well on a Blackstone report recently.

It all depends on the options and milage as well as conditions. I recommend you make a spread sheet with the various available options that the car(s) you are looking at and comparing have. Once you do that you can make a sound and intelligent decision. Things do get crystal clear once you see them in black and white on the same page

Also make sure that the car was totally inspected by a BMW dealership and you know beforehand what kind of repairs or money you have to put onto the table in the near future. Once you know that it will provide you with additional bargaining power to negotiate a fair price.

When I sold my e46 (2002) last year I had it inspected and certified after replacing one spring. I then got my asking price. One last item, as you know there is quite a price difference if you purchase from a dealership or privately.

Good Luck and welcome to the forum

try to see if anyone of your friends have friends with dealership licenses. When i was looking for M3s, my old friend happened to have become a dealer in the past year and showed me Mannheim auctions prices of M3s. They got for $36-$43k depending on mileage for 08-09 m3s. I saw a 08 M3 Fully loaded 6mt with roughly 25k miles go for $39k.

I am in the same boat as the OP but I am being patient and I think that is the key. Don't settle for a car that is "almost" right. I am waiting on the exact car that I want and until it pops up for the right price I am fine with waiting.

Miles are not always a great indication of a cars status, you'll need to test drive and see how the car feels, the s65 will probably go 250kmiles strong, but it's all about how the car was treated...

If everything checks out, be glad you don't have an overly abused M3, and enjoy it for a long time!

thanks for the all response so far. I will pass on this one and look for a CPO or preferably a private listing. I was also wondering how is the maintenance cost compared to normal 3 series, and how much can I expect to get out of a set of tires if I do mainly city driving? I doubt I'll floor it at every light but I'm sure on weekends I'll take it out to enjoy it... just want to see how it compares to C63 AMG cuz that thing eats rubber up like nothing else.

These eat tires as well, but not as bad as the Merc... I think I got about 15k out of my stock ps2's and I have a heavy foot. You can defiantly do better on the price/mileage, I had mine listed for $47 with 24k miles.

Good luck!

The regular 3 series are known to eat up tires with the run flats.
You can get some Vreds and they'll last a lot longer than the PS2's and cost half as much.
