2012 E93 M3 Speed Yellow, paintwork

Dropped the M3 off earlier this week to get the front bumper refreshed; replacement of the carbon fiber splitters since they were cracked up from curb damage and fixing the terrible repaint someone did to the front bumper.

Also the passenger side rocker was popped out a bit and further inspections revealed some cracking that the shop will fix (and repaint it).

Finally the passenger side carbon mirror cover had a chip out of it so I'm replacing them (both sides) so they'll match. After this it's getting a door ding taken out and a clear bra installed.

For more before information on the car, here's a video I took last week.

I'm also looking to have my front bumper and hood refreshed. Lots of small chips from the highway and mountain drives. Please post after photos.

Car is finished at the body shop, I'll post photos of the work and the new splitters.

Now it's down the road at the paintless dent repair place... who called me this morning.

The Atlanta car was atacama (spelling?) yellow. There are some Dakar yellow M3 coupes and convertibles. There are some speed yellow coupes but only two speed yellow convertibles produced (from the thread on here where the guy posted BMW colors and production numbers).

The paint process isn't going well but is hopefully back on track. When I went to get the car it was horrible, more of a mustard yellow that didn't match. Bad thing was the clear bra had been installed so that was throwaway work. They spent some time consulting with the paint company and figured out that the original paint is extremely thick, 12 mils compared to a normal car of 3-4 according to the body foreman. They painted a swatch many times and the result was much better with a lot of coats, I inspected it today and signed off for them to do the panels again with the same technique. They've never had a paint color or complicated match like this before.

Here's where things ended up. I'm happy but not completely satisfied, although I guess my expectations were perfection.

They repainted the sections and experimented quite a bit with paint applications to get as close as possible to the original Speed Yellow. It was a challenge for them and since I know what to look for, I can tell. But if you change your angle or shift position a few steps (in sunlight) it quickly changes and looks nearly spot on. In other words the yellow seems to change shades depending on where you're standing especially in the sunlight.

The guys at Midwest Clear Bra in Plymouth MN did a fantastic job (again) getting the bumper done and this time since we painted the right front fender as long as it was going back, they did the leading edge of that too. The right front fender had also had paintwork done (poorly) in the car's earlier life in FL so I'm glad we went back and did that. I should have done it 2 weeks ago but held off, and then when the paint matching challenge happened I said screw it, let's get it all done right. Also callout to Jake at Dentwerks PDR in Plymouth, MN for slaving over it for a full day taking out all 27 dents!

I'm very happy with the minty new and fresh carbon splitters on the front bumper and the carbon mirror caps. I want to cherish this time before something happens or at a minimum they get blasted by road debris (we applied clear bra film to those as well, it hopefully will help them last).

The final story here? If you have a BMW individual color car, getting paintwork may not be easy even for the best shops. And my shop (Sears autobody in Plymouth, MN) is one of the best around, working on Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes, BMW, and classic cars. Here's the amazing work they did for paint and bodywork on my (formerly rusty) 1980 E12 M535i:

The car looks fantastic. Maybe you can't get 100% but you are definitely close.

I've never seen Speed Yellow on a vert. Gotta say I'm digging it, I must be going through a love-phase on bright colors lately.

Any plans to shadow-line the trim? Can't believe BMW never made that an option for our E93's... It on my list of to-do's for our vert.

No, I like the silver actually and don't mind that it isn't all black.

I wish this forum automatically resized pictures.

Do you mind if I ask how much the front bumper respray cost you? I'm about to do the same.

Hard to break out the bumper alone, but the whole bodyshop phase was $2500 (fender, hood, side skirt). Also some of that time spent was to fit the carbon splitters.

Got it. I was looking at my options. Ideally I wanted to respray my hood, bumper, and fenders blended. I received a quote for $2400 and though that was high. Bumper alone without installation would be $530.
