Your comments are insightful and well taken. But a problem is, the employees usually organize as a result of political campaigns driven by union bosses who are as self-serving as the corporate management. The unions are not immune from dysfunctional organizational structure. I'm not sure the typical employee, in the long run, is any better served as a result of union protection.

The Democratic Party contributes to the Unions. The Union Bosses then force the Union Employees to vote for the Democratic Contender completing the self-licking ice cream cone.

Why are all the union bosses rich while their members are barely making it?

Why is all the President and Congress all rich while the rest of us barely make it?

Money, Power, and re-election is all they want and we pick sides and fight over THEM.......

Agreed... sometimes union protection results in short term gain for long term pain in many cases. There are lots of reasons North America is losing jobs to less expensive regions of the world... poor corporate management AND the the influence of unions on the cost of labour.

That depends on how you look at things. If I lost my job tomorrow, which could easily happen, I couldn't support my lifestyle.

IMO unions protect the under-achievers while not allowing the over-achievers to excel. Pretty much the opposite of what our country needs right now.

Does that make it right for companies to go out of the country for labor, etc. No but it is understandable in some situations.

For the country to get back on track, EVERYONE is going to have to be willing to change and accept compromises. It hasn't happened yet in Congress, or elsewhere, and if it doesn't soon it might be too late.

Employers and unions are going to have to come together for the big picture along with all these different factions with far ranging political beliefs, etc.

I guess my counter point would be that if you someone makes enough money to afford an M3 (or any relatively expensive car), then they are more than just making it today and, if they were being financially prudent, they would have the ability to make continengency plans/funds in case something went wrong BEFORE getting the expensive car so that their lifestyle isn't in a lot of jeopardy due to a short/medium term job loss. Not saying I necessarily do this myself either... just saying

BMW to Hire at Spartanburg County Plant

BMW announced plans to hire 100 new professionals for jobs at its Spartanburg County facility, according to a news release from the S.C. Department of Commerce.

The jobs will include roles such as engineers, IT professionals and production management associates, according to BMW.

The company also announced a new workforce recruitment program and a $5 million family health center for employees, retirees and their covered dependents.

The BMW Scholars Program aims to recruit students interested in a career in skilled manufacturing. BMW will partner with Spartanburg Community College, Greenville Technical College and Tri-County Technical College.

The program will provide tuition and book assistance to student participants, allow them to attend classes full-time and work at the plant up to 20 hours a week.

Not to defend BMW, but why shouldn't they be able to locate their workforce where they choose. Why do they "need" to maintain an American/Canadian workforce? Is it a North American "right" that BMW and other automakers have to keep jobs here. Anyway, not trying to be argumentative... I just don't get the basis for the comment.

Also, the job losses are affecting the US and Canada... so it isn't an assault only on the American worker.
