Lap Timer and Data Logger

This upcoming winter, I had the original intention of revamping my suspension setup for something a little more advanced and with more diverse adjustability. After sitting down awhile and talking to buddies, I decided what may be best for me right now is to continue investing in the "driver mod." My intentions are to use modding budget on tools and courses to improve my driving skill.

Being the geek that I am and loving to analyze data, I have started to become curious on lap timers and data loggers. I am looking for system that will take video, GPS track, and give me basic data to analyze and help find my faults in driving.

I have started looking into systems by AiM, Traqmate, and Racelogic. I'd love to hear people's opinions and recommendations. I am a rather novice driver just looking to continue improving. I'd love to have something that logs data so when I drive with future instructors, I have "notes" to study of off.

Thanks again!

AiM
- easy to use and understand software
- infinitely upgradable
- most popular amongst amateur racers (lots of support and feedback)

Thanks for the suggestion. I am strongly considering AiM's new SOLO DL...it looks like an incredible deal for what it offers. For video, I'll probably pair it with a GoPro and not really worry about data overlay on the video. I figure most of my data analysis will be from the computer rather than watching my videos and noting my data.

The SOLO DL is a new GPS logger systen that AiM just released. You can connect to the OBD port or ECU. OBD will only give you limited information, such as RPM and speed. ECU will give you over 30 channels of data such as RPM, speed, throttle position, brake pressure, etc.

If you want a system that has more expansion capability, EVO4 is your best bet. It works the same as a SOLO DL and can send data to the SmartyCam for overlay.

Let me know if you have more questions.

I'm glad you could chime in Richard! I was going to send you another email asking some questions about a data logging system.

To be honest with you, after looking into the pricing of the EVO4, it's a great deal more than what I want to spend. I think the SOLO DL fits me perfectly, but I would like a system that will collect throttle and braking. I'm assuming the OBDII type won't be able to record that for data analysis, only the CAN type?

As I mentioned earlier, I think pairing the SOLO DL with a GoPro will fit my novice needs perfectly and still stay within my budget. Thanks again!

Let me check with AiM to verify what they can read off of the OBDII on the M3. Which car will you be using in particular? E46 or E92?

To wire to the ECU, I offer an M3-specific plug-and-play harness with full installation instructions.

Send a message via AIM to VSmotorsports
AIM is definitely the company to go with their customer support from emails, phone calls, and even showing up to some club racing events makes it worth it. Tons of tools to improve your driving and learn from the data. Plus many people in our area Alex are very familiar with their products and how to use them.

Sweet! Thanks for the suggestion Matt. I spoke to a couple local guys and I know they have the Traqmates. This new AiM SOLO DL is really catching my eye. I'm pretty excited for next years track season now that I'll finally be back home permanently and no more traveling! My goal for the remainder of the year is to make sure my car is running strong, reliable, and preparing it with small essential tools for the following season. See you in several weeks!

I am using race-keeper and quite happy. Video is integrated automatically and easy OBDII interface. I installed it myself.

They are releasing Mac support soon. Most race/driving schools use this product.

More info from AiM:

SOLO is currently available. It has 16MB of memory and will record lap time, GPS (speed, G's, heading), and temperature. I should have one in a few days.

SOLO DL will be available in September. In addtion to the functionality of SOLO, it adds ECU integration via M-World's custom CAN harness. This adds the logging of the following channels:

RPM
Gear (DCT only)
Wheel Speed (for each wheel)
Brake Pressure (for each wheel)
Clutch (manual only)
Steering Angle
Throttle Position
G’s
Fuel Load
Battery Voltage
Gyro
Water Temp
Oil Temp
Temp Outside

Both SOLO versions are powered by internal rechargeable batteries.

Thanks for the update Richard! With the SOLO DL, which of those channels would also be available via OBDII?

How exactly does your harness work for CAN integration and would this be available for the E46 as well?

I demoed this system at NJMP a few weeks ago and liked it a lot. As you said, fairly easy setup and nice OBD II interface. I like the ability to do multiple cameras as well--one on windshield, one on rear side glass aimed at driver.

I think they are one of the few companies with dual-stream video and seamless video integration. The video integration is sweet and I was able to easily download the video and save it into iTunes and watch on my AppleTV. Not to mention they have an iPhone App you can use to display the track timer (lap times, RPM, speed, etc). Just mount it on your dash and use WiFi.

I am sure the AIM stuff is good also. I used to be a kart racer and used the AIM stuff all the time but this Race Keeper stuff is simple to use and feature rich. I don't work for them but know one of the engineers who lives near my house. I can always hook you up with him if you have questions.

Could I theoretically record a 60-130mph time on the highway?

Considering that it has a timer on there and can record speed, is this technically possible?

If you are asking about Race Keeper. Yes you can setup the device to start at 60mph and stop at 130mph. All you do is program the software on your laptop and store it on SD card and load it into the main box. Piece of cake.

They also sell a toggle switch that you can mount under your dash and it will turn the system on/off. I just use the cigarette lighter adapter to turn on/off.

I apologize, I was referring to the AiM SOLO.

Thank you for the heads up regarding the Race Keeper though!
