A little input?

So yesterday I pulled into a gas station (Shell 91 FTW!) and I filled up and say in the car, I had the key in my pocket and I pressed the button to start the car, but it wouldn\'t start! It just kept turning over but it wouldn\'t start! I tried it 3 times and after that I just turned everything off and got out of the car locked it, unlocked it, tried to start it and it started...wtf? I have no idea why it would do that. I just got the car a few days ago (used 09, 23k miles) and had a dealer inspection done prior to purchase and they gave it the ok. It\'s been fine ever since but it just bothers me and I want to know what it is!

it happens, sometimes i try to do something too, and it only works out on the third try.
it shouldnt happen but if it happens rarely just live with it, if not take it to the dealer.
BTW your key battery is probably very low, you need to have your dealer change it and you will be fine !

Shell 91 is not FTW, it's the bare minimum recommended by BMW. You should put at least octane 93 (if it's available of course), which is what BMW recommend.

In the southwest, 91 is pretty much the highest you can get at regular pumps. Back when I lived in Pennsylvania 93 from Sunoco was at every station.

So, lower octane gas has a negative effect on the key fob...that's a new one

Yea there is no/super rare 93 octane here it sucks :-/

And I replaced the batt in the key a few days ago so it's not that...

If it's a constant issue I'll bring it up to the dealer...but it still annoys me, such a high end car an these little things go wrong :-/

I really doubt if the car would run any better on 93 vs 91 octane gas.

I was under the impression that the key battery is rechargeable

However, recharging of course only takes place when you insert the key into the slot, I always do this on long trips (my dealer told me so when I picked up my former new Z4). I never experienced any issues with starting my cars. Both my former 2 cars and the cars I drive now have keyless entry and I follow that rule.

Scratch that - You're right. CA Batteries are not rechargable, only none CA batteries are.

It must have been then on my e46 (2002 M3) the dealer told me to alternate my 2 keys to charge them. I drove that e46 for 7 years, never did have a key charge problem.

the last 3 Bimmer's I did not have long enough for the key to be a problem, I guess you are right then that the battery needs to be changed when it stops working properly.

If you use jet fuel, and you are within 100 yard radius of the car, the car turns on and starts revving automatically, no key needed... hehehe

If you do a google search on this site for "idle valve crank" you will get some hits for people that had long crank times before their idle valve failed. I think there is a BMW document floating around for it too. I wouldn't worry about it unless it does it consistently, but you might find more info with the search.
