Having My Cake and Eating It Too

Before I even start explaining this thread, let me say how fortunate/blessed my family and I are to own one of these cars and in life, in general. So here goes.

I've had my eye on an M3 for over a year now. I've researched them on this forum, test drove one at my local dealer, and almost bought one a few months back. At that time I wanted a coupe as this would be my car. But my desire for another car kept me from buying an M3 not to mention my wife's one toy at a time limit. LOL. I agreed to this and instead of ordering an M3, I ordered a '12 Black Edition GTR, which will be here in August.

But I still couldn't get the M3 out of my mind, so I started thinking of ways to breach the subject with my wife about getting an M3 as well. I think some of you may know exactly what I mean. I decide to shelf the idea for a while, but about a month ago my wife gives me the perfect opening to propose my idea. She tells me that while she really likes and appreciates the car she has (an Audi Q5) that she wouldn't mind having a sedan or hatch again. Hmm. Then it clicks! A M3 sedan would fit the bill perfectly--in my mind. Can put the kids in it. Check. Get groceries. Check. Have a spirited drive every now and then--or more. Check. But her idea was more along the lines of a Mazda 3 or perhaps a 335i. And I have to give her kudos for being budget minded and open to other possibilities. She is awesome. More on that later.

So, a week and a half ago, I set up an appointment at the local BMW dealer to drive both a 335i and M3 back to back. After driving both, guess which one she liked? Hard guess right. The M3 it was. She liked the way it handled and the power delivery of the N/A engine better (no offense to 335i owners as I think this is also a great car). Of course, it didn't hurt that the M specialist demoed some of what the car was capable of. We get to the dealer and my CA places zero pressure on us to buy that day. Instead, he says take a day or two and decide what you would like to do. A breath of fresh air in the car buying world. We take his advice and leave. Over the next week, my wife and I weigh the pros and cons of buying the M3. Her primary concern was having a 70K family car in addition to my weekend toy. I tell her what I've said earlier in the post that we are lucky to be able to afford one of these and that it fit in our budget just fine. Of course, I also throw in that it is truly unique and part of a dying breed with that sweet V8. Besides the price, she explains how much she enjoyed driving the car and, if we got one, that she would like to take it to the track and get instruction on how to drive it closer to its potential. That is the other part of awesomeness in her I was referring to earlier.

So guys, we did it. On Sunday we ordered that last allocation my BMW dealer had for an E90 Sedan. We ordered it with the following options: Space Gray, Black Novillo Leather w/Brushed Alum. trim, Cold Weather Pack, Competition Pack, Premium Pack 2, Convenience Pack, DCT, and Enhanced Premium sound. We are excited to say the least and can't wait to get her car and the 1200 mile break in over. The car should be here late Sept./early Oct. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge you've provided about this car.

It was a painstaking decision a few months ago to choose between the GTR and M3. Thanks to my wife and god, I'm lucky enough to have both in the garage in two short (uh, make that long) months. The wait begins...

I can't imagine waking up in the morning and having my coffee, getting dressed and go to the garage only to decide, should I take the GTR or the M3. Life is good

Thanks for all of the positive comments everyone. Yeah, the wait is going to be tough. I'll probably be on here living vicariously through others that have or are getting their cars. Thanks again.

In all honesty, I sold the SL 4 months ago and I forgot to change my info on that. Just did it though. It was an awesome car and a privilege to own one but like you said I love cars and tend to like to try a different one every couple of years. I don't know if it's a disease but rather an obsession. But as I tell my wife, these cars are my "mistresses." She is cool with that and even teases me about not being too hard on them when I take them out. My normal response is that I'm not taking them home to meet my mother and I'll treat them as such. LOL.

Yeah, cattle call and all. It's a great company and they treat us so well. Very little to complain about. I feel lucky to have such an awesome job, especially in this economy. I enjoy going to work and can't imagine doing anything else. Disclaimer, winning the powerball might change this train of thought.

Congrats and great story! Enjoy both in good health! I too have this obsession, changing cars every 18-24 months. I currently have a '09 E90 M3 but had an 04 E46 coupe M3, '06 porsche C2S, '03 corvette C5, '94 corvette C4, '93 5.0 mustang coupe, & my first car a 1990 honda civic hatch back. Now I am looking at getting a '12 M3 but haven't decided on E92 or 93, decisions, decisions. Oh yeah, my wife is awsone too!

It's nearly impossible to justify an M3 purchase. Somehow you did it. Congrats to you sir and you made the right decision!

Congrats on the M3 order! I'm sure we'll cross paths at work in the future and look forward to it. What kind of M3 did you get?

Yeah, likely we will! I ordered an E92, Space Grey. Luckily I have a wife like yours that blessed me with the "if you want it, get it" line.

Thank you! Yes, it took a lot of convincing but I think the test drive did the trick. She understands and accepts my love of cars. But I know she will like it too once she begins to use it on a daily basis. And I get to have a little fun when I'm home and we have a family outing. I just really like that this car is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Except for those of us in the know, very few are aware of this car's potential and I like that!

Long story from when I first got the car. I don't want to hi-jack the thread from the OP's great story so I'll leave it at that. I've actually been quite happy with the car for the last year or so. But it still ain't an M3.
