Possible Switch to Cayman S

So I may be selling my car and switching over to a Cayman S in a few months... It won't be new, looking around 08 or so, about the price I can sell my car for. I have seen some discussions in the past, but have never been a Porsche owner before (owned 3 other BMWs among others). Any possible help with some ups and downs? I know I can google specs and equipment, but I am looking more for some personal experiences or knowledge... Thanks in advance!

Been driving one for a few days so I have direct comparison. These are completely different machines. If you can make do with two seats and that tiny amount of luggage space I say go for it! When it comes to looks I simply never liked those porsches whose lights weren't round but the Cayman has beautiful proportions overall. An extremely well balanced car with tons of grip. Where it really wins is with the way the road information is being transferred to the driver. In terms of handling I place it way ahead of both the Carreras S/4s

If you are not going to be tracking the car, you should also take a look at the Boxster S. You would gain some luggage space, and you can drop the top, which really let's you hear the sweet sound of the flat six. It is a very capable car and does not give up much, is anything, to the Cayman S.

not an owner but have done my share of research on Cayman..... Must get S, sport chrono plus, and pasm packages. heard pdk is very good. also LSD on those cars is optional.....

cars are not easy to work on, and although reliable...... not to be confused with Japanese reliability

If I were to buy a Porsche, it would not be anything less than a turbo 911.

If I could afford a 911... I probably won't care about ups and downs to begin with... lol.. as much as I would love one...

X2Board... I will look into that as well.. never noticed how similar they actually are...

The turbo and 911s in general aren't half as nimble and precise as the cayman s. The S is crucial here though. I drove a regular cayman to an must say I wouldn't take one if someone has given it to me for free

and the coupe costs more? really porsche?

anyway, you are looking at an 08, which means that there is no LSD, and the PASM is a little crude. that being said, that the way the car transmit the information and handling is alot better than any bmw produce.

remember you are going to lose is acceleration (both torque and hp), space, ride compliance, and cabin noise.

what you are going to gain, is a level of handling that can only trully be appreciated on a track or a seriously aggressive backroad excursion (which lets be honest would be irresponsible).

ive contemplated stepping into a variety of porsches, i just cant justify for a daily driver. in a daily driving situation, you need to ask yourself if the compromises that a porsche forces you to make and worth the handling advantages that you wont take advantage of during a commute. to me, it wasnt worth it.

I thought the cayman had more trunk space than the boxster. Am I wrong?

Did you consider a BMW ///M Coupe? These are truly rare cars, classy, sporty, elegant and have a rock solid reputation regarding reliability. In the one week I now own this 2007 ///M Coupe, I get stared at by Porsche drivers all the time...

Why are you getting rid of your relatively new car and willing to take a large $$$ hit?

The VIN sticker states "Made in Germany". Only the assembly was done in Spartanburg, SC, where the German assembled drive train (by M Gmbh) was married to the US body. I've recenlty visited the Spartanburg plant and was very impressed. Read up on this ///M Coupe story and be impressed

Did you see this in person as well?

Well that just about talked me out of the Porsche.. I really like the newest Z style over that older style, but that M looks like a beast!

987s are awesome. They have a good amount of usable trunk space. One down side is that driving one will spoil you and almost any other car will feel slow (I don't mean acceleration) and disconnected in the handling department.

They also have an appetite for tires, they wear pretty evenly, but I replaced a set before 18,000 miles. To be fair I had 4 track days and an auto cross in there too.

A friend and I (he drove a Z4 at the time) went and test drove the z4m when it first came out. We both had the same conclusion, great engine but but nobody bothered to tune the chassis to deal with the new power. I did not like driving it, it felt like a parts bin car that was somewhat hastily put together.

That being said, I think the z4m coupe is one of those cars that I am going to see at a car show in 15 years and go on and on about how cool it is.
