For sure. Glad you are fiscally responsible. Can't same the same for my fellow countrymen.

Quick question that is off topic. What do you Canadians think about us Americans on the brink of default?

As would I. But, as they say, different strokes for different folks!

I think its disgraceful. While undoubtedly the government is to be shunned for certain expenditures, the people themselves have to absorb some of the blame as well. Two decades of extravagance and opulent spending is finally catching up. How many threads do you see here with cars for sale that and 1-2 years old being sold for "moving on" or "financial reasons"? I would hazard a guess that a lot of these sellers shouldn't have bought what they couldn't afford in the first place, but I digress.....

This has been brought up already but:
1. Get the complete service records from the dealer
2. Contact the previous owner if possible
3. Negotiate a complete pre-purchase inspection by a third party shop (dealer should have no problem with this if the car is CPO).

As for the financial situation south of the border:

Canadians should view this as a very bad thing since our economy runs parallel to the American one. I'm very thankful to be in the energy business which seems to weather the storm better than others but no Canadian should be happy about the US struggles, except for the fact we can get smokin deals on cars/car parts/and beer south of the border.

Do what everyone else does that I see these days...Buy a 335xi with the M Sport Package and then add more ///M Paraphernalia to the car than any real M vehicle.

This should actually be a thread in and of itself.

M3 all the way, but as others have said, I think I'd shop around a little more and see if one can be found with fewer miles, and maybe a 2009. I traded in a 2008 335xi for my M3, and there's simply no comparison. I hate hate hated the suspension in the 335xi. Basically, the 335xi gets its own suspension with a higher ride height for that lovely 4x4 look, I guess because BMW thinks everyone with AWD buys them to drive through a foot of snow. The M3 handles much better, yet still somehow feels more compliant than the 335xi. Enginewise, no comparison as well -- the 335xi is pretty fast, but feels soulless. The M3 has a dual personality -- don't rev it too much, and there's plenty of power for daily driving, but rev it, and it gets mean.

My e46 M3 was a CPO car and for three years it was a perfect car, not one issue with it. I would agree i would look for one with lower KM.

I now have a very lightly used 2011 E92 M3 (3k KM) and saved a lot of money over new.

I think you have to take your time and find the right CPO car.

I went through this same thing 335xi, 335is, and M3. I have no regrets winter driving RWD M3s in the winter in Calgary, winter tires and you are good.

Wow! So many Canadians here.

I am really disappointed in my fellow Americans for spending beyond their needs and living well beyond their needs. Everyone should be apprehensive about this dire situation because it impacts everyone. I live debt free and outright own everything (including houses and cars), so I will be standing on my little soap box when it all goes down.

To the original post, if you have to ask you cannot afford it. please let this be a warning for you. Don't be like us stupid Americans and don't make the same mistakes.

Nope. I didn't say that. What I am saying is that if that question pops up in your head regardless if you posted this question on this forum or not, I wouldn't buy the m3 if I were in your shoes. But that is just mho, which you asked for in your op.

You also have to think about gas, tires, and insurance, which can add up quickly.
