I would hope not. The press release doesn't mention it, only being able to choose between two different steering quickness settings in the MDrive menu.

Steering
Active Steering varies the ratio with speed (more responsive at low speeds) with an electric motor and a set of supplementary gears.
http://www.bmwusa.com/LeadGenBYO/Aut...e=217&level=01 Some don't like it, some do. Electric Power steering is powered by, obviously, an electric motor instead of hydraulic pressure, but only varies effort, not ratio, I believe. There will be an M Mode setting for a sportier setting. Not sure on the details.

Whatever we want to call it, it is still a steerimg designed specifically for M3 I don't quite see the reason why regular 3er elements would go to a prestigious Motosport design?
I have big faith to Motosports engineers. The new M3 is going to be very different.

Electric power steering pump is great, I don't think it will degrade steering feel like active steering, and it saves a couple of valuable hp, too.....
It shows how much faith bimmer got for their active steering system, hope they can continue to focus on the essentials and not on gadgets like active this and passive that... |

I beleive the BMW system uses sensors to detect the motion and torque of the steering column and a computer module applies assistive power via an electric motor. Itr's not just an electrically-powered hydraulic pump. This allows varying amounts of assistance to be applied depending on driving conditions. A switch or program can switch between different assist curves (boost curve) or like on Audis, Volkswagens & the BMW Z4, the amount of assistance is automatically regulated depending on vehicle speed. BMW makes reference to varying steering response be programmable with the MMode settings.

language directly from the press kit @ page 10:
"The optionally available MDrive configuration enables the driver to pre-select the response of the Servotronic power sterring. In the process, MDrive is able to follow two ocntrol maps varying steering forces between the Normal and Sports settings as a function of road speed" a little different than active steering, but in end-effect achieves a very similar goal.
