If you need every option under the sun; go used. Seems options cause even worse of a resale hit.

If you're relatively low-option spec'ed, I'd get new. I don't trust anyone to break in an M3 engine properly around my neck of the woods. Mostly a bunch of dbags and hooligans that drive M3s.

Slightly used is by far the best value and there are plenty of people that buy fast cars and baby them. Just get a very thorough inspection.

On the other hand, you can only do Euro delivery when you buy a new car. IMO, that's the only reason to buy new.

I purchased new not for a status issue like someone else mentioned. Once the plates go on no one knows if you bought it new or used so who cares. I purchased new as others have stated that I know the history of the vehicle. There are too many people moddding their cars, tracking, etc. At least I know what modding I have done, accidents, and any other behaivors.

Now if you only plan to have it a few years then a CPO M3 should be okay.

For me, new. Wanted the Comp pkg with its "modified Dynamic Stability Control and a specially designed sports mode for the Electronic Damper Control", etc. Also having it from new there is at least a good degree of knowing the car's history; would hate to have an issue on a used M3 and have service blame it on something that happened to the car before I had it (having had service headaches in the past I just want to do what i can to avoid them this time around)

Fwiw if considering CPO, I have heard of CPO cars which have had accident damage so it is worth having them checked over like any used car.

I wouldn't look at this as a "new" vs. "used" debate.
Look at it as a '09 options vs. '11 options.

I have the '11 ZCP and find myself toning the settings down to Comfort for DD.
The extra stiffness and lowered stance offered by my M3 goes pretty much unused.
In essence, I paid a premium for options that I really didn't need.

Ironically, I knew this would be the case for me going into the transaction, but
I wanted absolute control on the extras including interior, color, sound, CA, etc.

I would have been just as happy in a cherry '09 pre-owned and saved alot of money,
IF I could have found a model for sale with exactly the specs I was looking for.

In other words, if the '09 you're looking at has everything you want, buy it.
It's got at heart the same gorgeous powerplant.

Well then that puts me in a predicament of low-option new vs fully optioned 09+ used.

I'm looking at upgrading from my 335i that I've owned for almost 5 years, and so I've had a lot of time to think about how to switch over the M3. I am leaning towards the used route, looking at a 2010 or 2011, ZCP. I think I can be just as happy with used (bought my 335i new).

I'd go for low mileage used. Take it for a 15 min test drive at least and ask for the service history. There is never a guarantee the car won't be a lemon, even if its new. Plenty of lemon treads on this forum from guys who bought new.

I bought an 09 in 10 with 9800 miles on the odometer for $18K less than was on the window sticker. Bonus, is previous owner purchased maintenance plan to 100,000 miles or 2015. I've only had one recall for DCT and car has performed great.
