In one hour and 10 minutes I am dropping off my E61 535 6MT and picking up an M3 (E90). Important thing I learned about non-M 6mt cars. They arent the same as M 6mt. They feel the need to add the "lag" in the shifting/uptake. The only way to make it go away is with the CDV mod/delete. I found it super aggravating and if I were to buy another 535-550 no matter how much I love to row my own, I'd buy the auto. One mans opinion.

I am not saying it was near the same performance but it had the qualities especially if you do not necessarily want to drive the piss out of your car.

I have driven the new 5er and the new 535 is downright slow and huge even compared to the e60. I loved my e60 and if I did not have the money I would have stuck with it-I wanted an m3 for awhile now so I sold my e60.

For half the cost you could get a used 550i e60 for 30k completely loaded and it would be quite fast, nimble and fun. Or a used 535 with a tune would be a lot of fun.

The new f10 550 is indeed fast and handles well for a huge car but you feel like you are in a cruise ship. The e60 was IMO a great combo of lux highway cruiser but nimble and small feeling enough for edgy driving. The e60 m5 was the all time best M car IMO.

I just do not think you would be happy in a 535 if you truly are comparing it to an m3
Wall $treet nailed it. I have owned two E60s and have driven the F10 535i extensively. I have owned both an '08 and '11 E90 M3. The E90 series M3 and the F10 535i are two VERY different cars. The 535i may have a bit more low end grunt/torque and is sufficiently powered but it is muted and has questionable steering feedback, whereas the M3 does not hit its "stride" until about 3500 rpm - but beyond that it sings beautifully til 8200 rpm. The F10 535i is a luxury car with a nice smooth engine, the E90 M3 is a raw, high-performance supercar. The F10 535i has a lot of bells and whistles and a ride that borders on Lexus-like, the M3 has a very tight, but not uncomfortable (depending on damper settings) ride. And of course, the F10 535i is much bigger which might make a difference to you depending on your size. Both are nice cars - it all depends on what you want. Having driven and/or owned all of them, I will never not have an M3. Good luck!

Have you gotten an insurance quote? I am sure they are very different on the two vehicles so check into that for sure. Otherwise I'd say it depends on you. Do you have the discipline to keep your license? Surely the M3 is an obvious pick for a young person. Could also be the medium through which you end up in a wooden box.

My .02 is------> if you have to ask, an ///M3 is not for you. I have found that most people who didn't know for sure they wanted an ///M3 because they were looking at another car from another manufacturer in the same segment, wind up very happy with their decision.

BUT, I have found that most people who didn't know for sure they wanted an ///M3 because they were looking at another car from in a different segment were not happy when they went with the ///M.

If you are even considering a 5-series, go with it, and don't get an ///M.

Cheers,
e46e92

Z4M's came with the restriction. It's half an hour DIY to replace the valve. Not enough reason to not get manual IMO.

You hit the nail on the head with this comment. I did notice it odd how easy it was and smooth to drive and I suck at 6mt. Its like u get assistance. Ended up with the 8spd auto at the end. Dual front cupholders was a must!

So here is my situation, I am (or was?) in the market for an E92 M3 and I'd be spending around $50k on a used 08-09 M3 with <30k miles. I LOVE the car and I've owned a E46 for a while and it was amazing. But I did get into a lot of trouble with it, (tickets, arrested for racing, etc) and I still have my license but I'm walking a very thin line. My brother recently got a 08' 535i and it is a very nice car, 20' 3pc Asantis etc and its a great looking car and I do enjoy driving it. Just out of curiosity I looked up the F10 535i, slightly used ones and there are some surprisingly under $50k with 10k miles or less. Obviously they are in two different categories but in some weird way I want to convince myself to get the F10.

I have matured a lot (I'm only 21, don't hate) and don't speed (actually I am paranoid of cops now and It's not worth getting a ticket or in my case arrested) and literally drive like there is a cop behind me ALL the time. So if I did get an E92 I'd drive following the law.

So all in all, What would you guys get? And why?

and any other thoughts?
Take it from a 51 year old who has owned:
328
540
M3
550
X6 35i
X6 50i
X5 Diesel
Next?????

You're too young for a 5 series, you'll be bored in a year. Besides, it's almost as easy to get a tix in a 5 series as it is a 3'er. Exhibit some self control, respect your fellow drivers, get the E9X M3 and drive responsibly

Dude, you only live once. Just buy the m3 since it is in your budget. Hell, there are some people here on this forum who have a m5 or m6 since they were 20.

Dude I'm 21 and I saved up all my money for 3 years to buy an m3 and I probably will have some trouble making some payments but I would do it all over again just waking up and turning the car on justifies all of the cost.

Ps were you arrested for speeding? Because that just happened to my friend to.... 120 in a 65 :/

Thank you all for the replies. I'm extremely close to picking up an M, so wish me luck. Haha. I just thought to my self, fcuk it, you only live once pick up a 5 series when I have kids. Honestly I'll feel like I've made the right choice when I start up the engine on MY M3.

As for the speed I was doing 115 in a 45. Haha but I won. It was an immature race a couple years ago and I regret it and haven't done anything stupid like that since.

Holy cows! That was dumb.

FYI, you don't need a 5 series if you have kids. I have two and I have an M3 Sedan on order.

I am most likely going to pick up a 2009 Silver Stone E92 BMW M3 DCT with 22k miles and the following options:

Premium Package:

- Power Folding Mirror

- Universal Garage Door Opener

- Digital Compass Mirror

- BMW Assist

- Carbon fiber interior trim

Technology Package:

- M Drive

- Electronic Damping Control

- Comfort Access System

- Navigation System

- Keyless entry

-Premium HK Audio

-SIRIUS/XM Radio

-iPod/USB

Plus it has the upgraded LCI tails and LED halos.

A couple weeks and I should be able to go pick this up. :-)))

Not to argue, but rather to provide an alternate opinion, I think the 535 is an AWESOME daily driver, with a great BMW driving experience. Just like I prefer the 740Li over the 750Li, its lighter, plenty of power, so silky smooth and quiet and handles GREAT. I prefer the lighting feeling up front vs. the brute force, especially in an executive styled sedan.

If you get the 535, make sure to go with the i, not the xi, and make sure to get the EDC and sports package or M-Sport packages along ARS. The ARS and EDC options are curical on bmws now that they have softened them a bit. In comfort mode they feel like a lexus, in SPORT and SPORT+ they feel like a proper BMW. But I must add, on some roads that comfort mode is a welcomed addition

Cheers,
Mark
