Planning on doing my first track day (motorcycle)...

next month, does anyone have any tips or things i should prepare for. I have only been riding for a little less then two years now and am really hoping this trackday will help me improve my form and skills.

1) It's not a race. I've seen so many dicks on the track that think they're the next Valentino Rossi and all they do is F it up for everyone else when they inevitably crash or cause a crash.

2) Don't outpace yourself. As you're probably aware, the bike will give little warning when it's on the edge of control and if you're new to track riding, you'll probably miss the warning; i.e., one second you'll think you're fine and the next you'll be on the ground.

3) Make sure you're bike is properly prepped beforehand; e.g., safety wire where necessary, new-ish tires, tire pressure gauge and air compressor if you have one, etc.

4) Since it's your first track day, you'll probably be required to ride behind an instructor, at least at first. Pay attention, he or she can probably show you a thing or two.

5) have fun

Not a race, start off slow and work up.

+ 2 on the above. Also, if you don't have rear set pegs, make the investment at some point. You don't know what you're missing. Steel brake lines would also be a inexpensive but effective mod.......have fun....................Phil

The track almost always turns people into better drivers on the street, at least the ones who want to improve. Have you taken any safety courses?

Like everyone else has said, don't push your own limits. I've noticed with myself, if I don't push myself beyond my limits I progress faster than if I'm really pushing it. This goes for everything from driving to riding to anything else.

Great advice guys, thanks. I took the MSF course to get my license then another intermediate skills course up in NY last summer. Im doing the track day more for the improvement on my skills and a safe environment to lean over even more. I feel the street has me at a standstill because i dont feel comfortable yet taking the bike any further on its side.
Im riding a S4r monster so the rearsets arent aggressive really. Oh and the track day is at thunderbolt.
