Why is E9x m3 heavier than e46 m3?

The S65 is 15kg lighter than the L6 engine in the E46 m3, so where does the extra weight go to?

its bigger and more complex so its heavier. you can use more light-weight materials but this adds cost.

All your creature comfort equipment, and larger size as previously stated.

Because-its suspension/chassis is stronger in every sense of the way. Anybody remember the E46 M3 Subframe fiasco???

See link and hopefully this is a complete answer to your question-http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtest...alkaround.html

BMW learned from their mistake with the E46-hence the added strength around the rear subframe.

Not sure the specific differences, but mandated safety equipment has weighed down cars over time as well

I also was wondering what the specific contrast was. But I assumed much of the same; stronger subframe requiring more material, heavier seats (correct me if I'm wrong), increased bumper weight from safety requirements, increased number of sensors and diagnostic electronics, heavier shifter linkage and driveshaft, heavier exhaust, improve climate control including automatic filtering sensors for the HEPA system.. anything else that's significant?

Keep in mind all cars are far heavier now than they were. Most of that is due to saftey standards, some of it is due to increased wheelbase (length and width), more tech toys, computers and the associated wiring, sound insulation, air bag modules, etc.

But expect to see some trending to lighter cars with the introduction of carbon plastics which have the strength of steel, lightness of plastic, and can actually be easily repaired unlike carbon fiber. Also expect more aluminum construction.

Reinforced subframe since the e46's had a class action lawsuit against them.

Guys, I'm not the most tech savvy guy here but whenever E9x weight issue comes up (too frequently I say) I always wonder, why do you mostly look at the weight as opposed to
Track records
Power/wt ratio
Overall performance

Usain Bolt is heavier than Florence Griffith-Joyner but faster. E9x is heavier than E36 but faster, so what's the big deal. Why would you compare the weight of a V8 to a V6 to start with?
Would any of you complain if BMW gave us a new M3 that is 100lb heavier than E92 but V10 and 600HP??
I don't get it
I understand that you would want to have the same car lighter to extract more power/wt and end up with faster time but then where does it end, remove all seats but driver’s, don’t order EDC, NAV, AC, power seat, etc but how many of us on that forum would buy such a car? Go drive a Lotus if that’s what you’re looking for.

I dont mind the weight of the e9x m3 but there was a thread earlier about "what you dont like about your car" and most of the members said the weight of the car. I never driven an e46 so i dont think e9x is heavy, especially my previous ride was 2000 kg.

That's not the point at all. For the same power to weight ratio, I'll take the lighter car any day. Eventually, more power will make a difference at high speeds. I much rather have the more nimble car.
