Best Waterproof Digital Camera??
Hi there,
I'm looking to get a waterproof digital camera in the next couple of days. The ones I'm currently looking at are: Sony DSC-TX10, Olympus Stylus Tough 8000, and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1. Has anyone tried any of these yet or can anyone provide me with any other recommendations? Thanks inadvance! |

I have an olympus. It is a great camera and you can literally submerge that shit in the water to take pics. Love it. Just kind of hard to figure out when taking different pics. Sometimes it comes out blurry. I don't mess around with it much though because I have an SLR now.

Do you guys think its better to get a regular non-waterproof camera and get a waterproof case vs. getting a waterproof camera? |

For convenience sake I would just get a water proof camera like the Canon one posted above. I recently bought a underwater housing for my S95 and I've used it exactly once. The reasons I bought it were: the S95 takes better pix and videos and the housing would allow me to dive deeper (thought we were gonna go diving). It was inconvenient having to carry the housing. Keep in mind that you will have to clean the housing after each use as well as check to see if it's leaking before each use. If you're not going to be diving that deep or just want a waterproof camera to take on vacation I would just get the one posted above.

Waterproof SLR cases cost almost the same amount as an SLR, and even still I don't know if i would rest easy with $3000 of equipment with me underwater. A cheap $30 one from amazon worked pretty well, but I would spring for something a bit better quality if possible.

If you want the best, get the best, if not the get a cheap one. BTW if you are worried about your DSLR getting wet, you should have it insured for repair/replace. If you work with it enough you will drop it sooner or later and need a new one. |

I realized I didnt say I would rather buy a cheap underwater digicam, opposed to bringing my dslr underwater with the right housing. I meant a $30 underwater digicam worked pretty well for me. A $30 housing, might as well have just thrown money into the ocean.
You can also check shops to see if you can rent a DSLR with underwater housing for your vacation. If you are just shooting for hobby, it is a good alternative to see what your capabilities are, and if its worth it for you. |

I'm a pretty strong proponent of Canon's underwater cases for their point and shoots. You can pick up a UW case for most of their (non-SLR) cameras for about $130-170 and they work down to about 100 feet - way more than enough for my snorkeling uses.
The best part is that Canon makes some fairly high end P&S cameras. I've had a G9 with a UW case as my dedicated watercam for a couple of years now and it works quite well. Been in ocean at least 20 times and never flooded. And I still have a decent 12 MP P&S to take out of the case when I don't want to carry a DSLR around with me. |

I grabbed the Olympus a while back because i wanted a camera i could use in downpours and use snorkling. With a 33' depth on it, it goes the furthest under water and that's why i trust it the most.
the 6'6 drop height is good for me because i'm a shade over 6'4 ![]() but it's piece of mind to have something that's water tight. I've taken my DSLRs out on kayaks and boating a bunch of times and i've even kayaked on the ocean with my DSLR, and after that, i decided it wasn't such a good idea anymore once i saw how much salt got on one of my lenses just from the air and going from a cool camera bag to warm air. I will continue to use the DSLRs on boats and kayaks, just not near salt water. But having the Olympus, i can put it in my bathing suit pocket and go for a swim with it, or even snorkling, and not worry about it. optically it takes pictures nowhere near the quality of the equipment i have, but the equipment i have, i wouldn't take outside in a monsoon type of downpour either. a light drizzel won't bother me. I've seen a low end Nikon take one hell of a beating in BC rain and get dropped on the ground, and it just kept shooting, so when i look at the weather sealing on my 5DmkII and my 7D, i really don't worry too much at all. My retired T1i managed the same drizzle as that Nikon i mentioned above, and with no worries. (British Columbia rain, more of a misting rain) |
