For those who bought the car new, do you put the license plate on after you got it?

Do you put the plates on or leave the dealer name? I got couple of friends dont put the plate on, just leave the dealer name plate on it. The reason is to avoid the camera. I didnt put my plate on until i got pulled over and the cop found out that

Always rear plate only, and NEVER any freaking dealership advertising. If dealer logos/stickers/metal plate frame can't be removed without a trace, it's a deal-breaker for me. And so is holes in the front bumper .

Rear OEM ///M plate only. Dealer frame came off as soon as I got home.

Might do a magnetic front bracket when I pick up my plates from the DMV. No front plate parking tickets suck.

I left the dealer plate on until I got my own plate, then I took the dealer plate off and put my new plate.

My girlfriend has a '04 e46 M3 and she still has her Rusnak dealer plate on!!!! She has never had a problem but at the same time, she has not been pulled over in that car for speeding or any other moving violation.

i'm not sure what you mean, i never pull the temp tag until i get my permanent plate. It's just plain stupid.

if you're talking about the plate frame, i took that off once I got my permanent plates.

Finally put the rear plates on after 9 months. They have DUI checkpoints here where they will also check for valid license and registration. Didn't have any problems, but didn't want to run into any either if I found myself in one of those checkpoints.

I supply and have the dealer put my rear tag on. I allow advertising if they choose for $20,000 per month.

i wonder if that story will hold.
First of all, since insurance fraud is illegal that story might not make you look very good in the eyes of the cop. You didn't actually commit insurance fraud, but your saying you plan to if you crash at the track.

Second, it's highly unlikely that insurance companies would hire people to hang out at tracks every day photographing the cars just to see if they insure any of them. I doubt anyone would buy that.

And finally, the insurance is tied to the VIN, not the plate. Most companies don't even ask for your plate number.

You're probably better off telling the cop that you meet up with other ED people at the track and you all run with the ED plates on while you're there. You just forgot to switch them back before you left. A simple oversight by a harmless, law-abiding citizen who does his aggressive driving at the track rather than on the street. You're very sorry, you have a screwdriver with you, and you'll put the US plates back on right now.

I only put a rear plate on all my nice cars. Cars just looks better without a front plate and it's a very minor legal issue.

I think some people are confusing dealer tags (plates) with dealer plate frames. Also, in some states dealers issue temporary tags, but others do not and the car either is bare or has a dealer ad tag. So, I think OP is asking who would just leave the dealer plate on and drive around without putting their real tags on once acquired so that they could avoid red light / speeding cameras or tolls.

Maybe it's just an urban legend, but I've heard of that happening. It would suck to just be visiting somebody at a track day and have your rates jacked up or your policy outright canceled just for being there. Hence not leaving your plate out for all to see at a track day.
But I agree that the original story didn't sound very good.

We don't have speed cameras here so it never occurred to me to run without plates as long as you can get away with it. I might not mind getting a free trip on the toll road to make up for the incorrect bills I've received from them and can't get remedied, though

Do you get a window sticker on a ED car? When I got mine in Munich it didn't have a window sticker...do they put it on at the VPC stateside?

Picked up car on a wed, was heading out to dinner on a fri. In freeway fast lane stuck behind two other cars stuck behind a 60mph prius. The other two cars passed the prius with a show of frustration. I waited out a bit since I was trying to turn a new leaf as a more patient driver. But when the prius dropped below 55 that was it for me. Passed him got up to 75. Immediately a chp cruiser got behind me and I hadn't put in my valentine yet. Oh crap I thought but didn't want to slam on brakes and basically admit speeding. Kept going at around 70-75. He lights me up about a mile later. Pull over and he comes up and says first thing, don't worry I'm not going to write you a ticket just wanted to talk to you about a couple things. First you were speeding as I tailed you going 80 . Second I know ppl like to have their dealer plates on for a long time but you shouldn't because if there's ever a stolen white BMW reported we're stopping all white bmws and you prob don't want to be pulled over for no reason.

He went on for a bit and I just listened. In short though one of the most pleasant chips I had met. Very polite. And great that he let it go.

Haha, I guess your intention to turn over a new leaf has already paid a karmic dividend. Always be polite to the police... you never know when they're going to let you go with a warning so don't rip into them right off the bat!

At the moment my car still has the German plates on from ED. I haven't been able to bring myself to remove them yet. I have been considering learning some German and just pleading ignorance if I get pulled over.
