Considering a 2011... am I crazy?

Need a quick sanity check and I have a feeling I know the response I'll get from you guys. As we all know the E90 is going to end production in October so I'm considering trading in my 2008 for well equipped 2011. Financing currently and looking to continue to do so... I got a screaming deal on my 2008 (purchased late 2008 when they were being blown out) so expect the trade in value will more than wash out what I have left owing. Discounts seem decent on 2011s and the rates aren't too bad at the moment either. Mainly just wondering if its a good move getting into a newer model of the same car. I've looked around and considered a bunch of other options but nothing really interests me at the same price range and I'm probably a few years away from dropping $100k+ on a P-car.

The F30 M3 likely won't be out for 3 years or so and its hard to say I'd automatically get the next one (too early to tell)... but on the other hand I don't see myself keeping the 2008 M3 for more than a year or so longer hence the thought to upgrade to a new one. Not to mention I could factory order with my preferred options (my 2008 was on a lot so not much choice), full warranty coverage, latest version of Nav, BMW apps, etc etc. That should easily tide me over for 3-4 years or longer and then perhaps at that point I would move to something different. Aside from potential resale of the E90 taking a beating when the new F30/F32 M3 comes out any thoughts on downside? Financially its not a huge stretch although it will certainly be more than I'm paying now... appreciate any input ie. validation that I should definitely go for the 2011.

I did it and I am very happy with my decision to do so.The 11 has been a nice upgrade with the M-DCT and the Comp package but I do miss my sunroof! The new car is at least 3 years if the history proves accurate and as it might be the last chance to get a 4 door for a while, why not do it!

Nice, was expecting to hear from you and that is the sort of input I wanted to hear.

Its still unconfirmed as to whether or not there will be a 4 door M3 in the future at all so that is part of my reasoning... I do prefer a 4 door (young kid) and there is little else out there in the same ballpark aside from the IS-F and C63. Hard to think of any major downsides aside from the extra cash every month. I'm sticking with manual and likely skipping the Competition Pkg mind you, I'll go aftermarket for wheels/suspension.

You might want to rethink the suspension as the Comp suspension is that good! The 359 wheels also great in person much better than the photos.

Not that you'll here much disuasion here, but "do it"!

I've wanted an E90 M3 ever since their introduction in 2008. Thats the only body style I wanted (personal preference) however I wasn't in a position to afford it back then. Now as the E90's end of production draws nearer, I have decided to jump on the bandwagon and intend on keeping the M3 indefinately.

I was able to factory order mine as well-wouldn't have had it any other way for a long-term purchase, and despite the special order, was able to get a healthy discount too. Get in before you can't get 'em any more!

I think you should "do it". I just order one about a month ago. Finance rates are great, initial problems (if any) have been fixed in the last 3 years. Therefore, the car would be as clean as possible. Although, bear in mind that with all the nice options + HST, the car will be close to the $100,000 mark. Lastly, you can get a decent discount (7-8%) on MY '11 now that is typically unheard of in the first two years.

All in all if you want an M3 then this would be your last chance in owning a naturally aspirated, high revving V8.

Hah, my thinking exactly. Still have to run it by the wife but seeing as she just blew her brains out shopping this weekend on clothes/shoes (her dime mind you) I think she won't put up too much of a fight.

Thanks for the input guys... its not surprising given the audience here though.

Do it - if I didnt pull the trigger on the S/C and have my eye on picking up something else as well, I would definitely trade to a new version. Like you said the F30 is still a ways a ways and a question mark if work getting in to at this point.

Yeah I hear that, I was initially thinking about modding (new wheels etc etc) but feeling I'd rather get into a well equipped 2011 vs my 2008 beater.

More importantly, what do you have your eye on?

Ultimately a GT3 RS, but probably not for another couple of years as we will be looking to get into a new house, which should mean a 3 or more garage. In the interim, I am looking to get an M6 Cab, always wanted the V10 and my wife would like a cab and since it will only be temporary, I wont care about parking it in the driveway and either storing the M3 or M6 in the winter.

You know, this has been how i've tried to live my life over the last year. My best friend's girlfriend is dying of cancer, she's 30. She studied all her life to be a doctor, and barely out of school... this hits her.

You don't know what lies ahead tomorrow. If you can afford the car today and you want it, get it. There will always be something better and newer around the corner, that's a certainty. However, nobody knows if we'll be here tomorrow, next week or in a few years to enjoy those ''up coming'' toys. Live today, in 3 years you'll see what you feel like doing :-). It's only a car.

Sorry guys but I disagree.

OP, I don't know how much mileage you have on your current car but paying maybe 40-50K more for essenatilly the same car makes no sense at all to me. You've already taken the bulk of the depreciation hit so why would you want to start that process all over again for the same car even if it's 3 years newer and the last year of that model? I strongly recommend you continue to drive your current E90 then see if you like the new model in a few years. You don't know what life has in store for you just around the corner and wasting money on depreciating assets is quite silly especially if you already have and enjoy what you lust for.

^^^ I agree. I have a 2008 E92 M3 and will keep it until I like something more. I do not like a 2011 E9x M3 more than I like mine.

I kind of agree with the above two posts... Unless ordering EXACTLY as you want it from the factory is critical to you...why not wait a bit and find a 2011 or even a 12 and allow someone else to take the depreciation hit. That's a double whammy for you...trading in AND buying new. Just my .02....

I was considering the same, but ultimately decided to wait it out.

I have never owned a new car for longer than a 3 year period for the 40 years that I have been driving .Yes being in the leasing business does make it easy for me to change vehicles and it is probally one of the reasons that I have been in it for 28 years.Even when I was working as a commercial pilot the longest my cars were around was 2 years.I have a lot of clients who also need new cars all the time and they just do it for change! And changing a car is a hell of a lot cheaper than changing the wife if you need change.

These are all good points that I've thought about (hence my post) however at the end of the day I'm realizing I really don't care about the depreciation hit and all that other boring stuff. As mentioned financially its not a big deal and really will only increase my monthly payment by a small amount, couple hundred at most. This is clearly not a financially based decision otherwise the points on depreciation etc would hold more weight... at this point in my life I tend to view things similar to rockrboy's post above, you only live once and when you work this hard why not enjoy yourself along the way assuming you can afford to?

You hit on a good point as well, ordering the car exactly as I want it from the factory is very important to me as is the piece of mind of having the latest/greatest model with newest options and full warranty for the next 4 years. As well the E90 sells in far lower numbers than the E92 so finding a used 2011 next year in my exact colours/options in perfect shape is likely next to impossible. And as mentioned the E90 M3 goes out of production in October so it is either now or never if I want to get a new (not used) one.

We'll see what happens I guess...

I'd say keep it. Probably supercharge it and/or get a BBK to not get bored for few more years, and save some money for the next car. If you do not want to switch to DCT, other things you mentioned are not really worth the switch, and unless you trashed your car badly, the new car will still be the same car. I understand getting the same model once your lease runs out, but with a purchased car it is not as compelling. It may seem like a good decision now, but once you spend some cash and realize you still get into the SAME car every day, it may not make as much sense anymore. Modding (even though I do not like it personally) may be a better way to get things more exciting, unless all you care is color or stuff like that.
