New M3 has active steering!

http://www.caranddriver.com/carnews/...otos-info.html

Looking at the new C&D post -- it looks like the new M3 has Active Steering! ! YEAH!

This is *bar none* the best option on my 335i. I was planning on skipping the M3 because I expected this feature to be missing. Now I'll reconsider.

Bravo BMW.

Active steering may be great (personally not a big fan, but to each his own), but I think you are missing the point of the M3 if the absence of active steering was going to be a deal breaker.

+1 . Active Steering is now proven to be the must have option for ultimate performance and joy. Not surprise this feature won't take too long be included in our local standard M3 package just like Merc has included Parameter Steering to all their high-end models.
A little story, a neighbor friend, currently owner of a E90who has a 335i on order. The day after he tested my AS E90 in the parking lot for 5 minutes, right away, he picked up his phone to call his salesman and asked to add AS to his on order 335i ! (it was late, sorry for him)
With AS, I can turn much faster, 19" rims wasn't felt any harder to turn. Not trying to bring up the boring 'AS adverse effects' argument again here, different car features could always have 'adverse effect' to a certain extent e.g. getting a nice looking E92 has the adverse effect of two less doors and 1 less seating! A Porsche is perfect but it has limited seatings/room for day2day and too expensive. Just all pretty personal things.
Absence of AS could be a deal breaker for potential C63 shopperss moving to M3. e.g. me.

I haven't tried it, but I don't think I would like it.

+1 to that... This new car really has nothing in common with the past M3's.. They have hyped the M3 line out and put to much junk into it and made it a car that car enthusiast like to drive to a car that caters to people with money that just want to go fast..

After looking back now I wish my dad kept his old E36 M3 or even his old E30 M3 both were slower yet more fun to drive than the E46's. The E46's had to much junk and you could feel the weight of the car.

I have AS on my 330 just because that was what was left in inventory, but I definitely wouldn't want it on the M3. Its primary benefit is low-speed maneuvering.

Not going to be much low speed anything in an M3 unless it's the speed of someone pulling on you, which would actually be negative in most cases.

AS is amoung the absolute most important options to get on a BMW.

I used to be an AS hater, but after trying it, after my very first AS enabled corner, I was converted into an AS believer, the system is just that good.

I suggest that everyone try it before knocking it. Just take a look at any real race car's steering ratio, F1, WRC, Karts- and then try to turn around and say that AS is not a true performance/enthusiast feature.

Personally, I really like the direction BMW is heading with the M3 series. *All* cars have gotten too big (compare a Honda accord of 10 years ago to one today! The old Accord is the size of today's Civic!)

The new M3 is to me, what I wanted before but could not have, the ultimate M5 sized car. Gone are the days of a 3 series being a small little car -- it's big now, it has to be... Look at even the mini! That being said, the 1 series is coming out, and the M1 -- that will fill the new "small" car segment again. The 3 series has really opened up in today's market well.

Now, I have to decide which car stays and which car goes for next year's M3... and sedan or coupe. But I don't need to decide if I want active steering... That *is* the decision factor on the car for me. Of course it's bigger, more features, more electronics, more more more more... That's what sells.

Hell, the best hybrids don't get as good a mileage as the old original mini cooper -- yet most never seem to stop and think why, or that it should be changed.

I'll have my M3 as my larger work car, and a small throw about car for the track and other fun items.

My $.02...

I dunno, the article indicates that the M button will change some settings in the Active steering as well.

Perhaps it makes the Steering permanent quick ratio while in M drive mode?

Wonder if there could be a chip mod that allow us to dial in our AS systems to a prefferred ratio and power steering assist. Would there be a market for that?

In the german pricelist there's absolutely no mention of AS! Not even as an option.
The M3 comes standart with an 'M Servotronic'.

With the 'M Drive'-option you are able to configure the steering, suspension and DSC settings individually through I-Drive.
