s65 indeed is a very special engine compare to the N54 found in the 1M. I remember a quote from a review when the M3 first debuted:

"Ferrari would be proud of this M3 V8 engine"

They kept DCT and M Seats out for the weight. Add another 250-300lbs, then how much does this car weigh?

They should let The Stig drive both back to back and see which one delivers the best time.

But first, Clarkson and Hammond should face off in both around Silverstone.

Why? We all know the 1M is quick. In the right hands it might be quick around tighter circuits.. but still, I ask why you care? Are you setting out to buy the fastest vehicle available for the dollar or do you want to drive a legend?

Asking us to not care about the engine in an M is like asking us to not care if it even has wheels, I mean if you don't care about the engine in a car, what else is there to care about, really?!?Everyone Oh-ah-ing the M5 like they don't know most of it is just changing the software on a 550i... and they get lazier and cheaper they don't even upgrade the parts anymore, they just lock/unlock everything by computer!

Why manual? Most M3's are DCTs. Manual M3 is getting more rare. It is a valid comparison between DCT M3 and manual 1M. I agree that if one was on better tires and or something like that, it would make sense to equalize because owners would do so, but in this case - you cannot get 1M with DCT and most would not get M3 with manual, so this comparison is spot-on.

Amazing post. Coming from someone that owns a 52what-i? And exactly what is the allowable topspeed in HK? Honestly (and sorry to break it to you) you wouldn't even understand "performance" if someone painted a picture of it for you, or you would never have bought a grossly overweight car with a puny engine!

I traded my M392 in for the 1M I now drive and I have driven a number of e30 M3s. Both stock as well as race prepared cars. Yes, the 1M comes very similar to the feeling you get driving the original M3 e30. Much more so than an M392 ever will. And it has nothing to do with the engine. It has to do with driving. And no, I won't attempt to try to explain it... you wouldn't understand.

It just boils down to the following: People shouldn't post bs on cars they know absolutely nothing about.

To concluded that is to remain clueless as to the speed of the 7 speed DCT. It doesn't lose boost/traction like the fully manual 6 speed does, so with it, simply will walk the current M3.

Example... I have rammed a stock 335i up the ass of a 500 hp AMG Black Series, with nothing other than boost and the ability to stay in boost while shifting. -That MB was not happy.
There's no way a stock 335 beat a Black Series, unless the driver was Rainman.

Its the ergonmics of the 1M that could stray many people in this regard.

Back in the day, driving the 135i and 335i, I swore the 135 was that much better and that it felt worlds apart. They don't.

How the cockpit makes you feel plays a big role.

And... with that said.. no matter what the 1M does, it will never feel special like a true M-powered car. Same way the F10 will never feel like the E60, but the F10 does have a motor far more tweaked than the 1M does. An N54, well, is just an N54, a good motor for a non-M car.

As an E30 owner as well, I will tell you the 1M will never feel like an E30, an E92 will never feel like an E30. Both perform far better than an E30 ever will. The E30 just feels nimble, and that is about as much it has going for it in regards to suspension technology, modulation and shear grip over the road.

Cars have come a long way, and this fascination with cars becoming pigs and over weight needs to calm down a bit.

Heavier M's are also much wider than before, much longer than before. While they do have a heavier foot print compared to 20+ years ago, they also have a much wider foot print which greatly offsets its weight. If an explanation is necessary, I will give one.

This also indicated general cluelessness about what makes a car fast. What makes a car fast is power to weight ratio more than anything else. Losing or not losing boost, DCT, auto or MT and all of the rest are much smaller second order effects.

M3 every day of the week and again on Sunday

Lets see the 1M keep its oil temps down at the track, when it's 90+ degrees out there..and then I might give it a serious once over.Till then NAV8 FTW!

Can someone edit that video to cut out all the people talk and just show the two cars driving on the open road? I mean seriously, their idiotic banter was nothing more than stating the car specs for the masses who probably don't know what half of all that meant anyway.

1M - Great car, but M3 - Perfect car.

O'rly? A few? Please provide links, as I have been following the threads on the 1M closely and know of only one where the member observed some power loss due to high temp(90-95deg) track conditions. And that was a totally unscientific butt dyno situation at the BMW driving school. Hardly the tracking by a few you are implying! The one serious 'track' test done in high heat by Dan P. observed no heat soak. Let's not start making shit up because of bias please.
