2012 F1 Calendar: Not 21 Races!

Original Post:

21 Races!

As a fan, I'm ecstatic. As an enthusiast, I worry for the teams that have to prep it all. 21 races will certainly run it's toll on everyone involved.
There are now only 20 races for the 2012 year. This is with the accepted removal of the Turkish GP.

Revised Provisional 2012 Calenar:

18 March – Australian Grand Prix (Melbourne)
25 March – Malaysian Grand Prix (Sepang)
8 April – Chinese Grand Prix (Shanghai)
22 April – Indian Grand Prix (Greater Noida)
13 May – Spanish Grand Prix (Barcelona
27 May – Monaco Grand Prix (Monte Carlo)
10 June – Canadian Grand Prix (Montreal)
24 June – European Grand Prix (Valencia)
8 July – British Grand Prix (Silverstone)
22 July – German Grand Prix (Hockenheim)
29 July – Hungarian Grand Prix (Budapest)
2 September – Belgian Grand Prix (Spa-Francorchamps)
9 September – Italian Grand Prix (Monza)
23 September – Singapore Grand Prix (Marina Bay)
7 October – Japanese Grand Prix (Suzuka)
14 October – Korean Grand Prix (Yeongam)
28 October – Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (Yas Marina)
4 November – Bahrain Grand Prix (Sakhir)
18 November – United States Grand Prix (Austin)
25 November – Brazilian Grand Prix (Interlagos)

Its gonna be 20 races only. The teams have told the FIA that they are only willing to run 20 races. If Turkey gets approved they might drop another track.

Honestly, Turkey is just a waste of resources. I know turn 8 is spectacular but attendance is a joke.

Also, 3 months is a decent enough break. Hell, I work 60 hours a week and get 4 weeks of vacation so why can't they do it?

Jean Todt announced today that there would only be 20 races, and 1 of the listed races would be dropped.

He also added that they don't know which race is being dropped for sure yet.

Thank you!

Never got why they need such a long break.

Um. In all fairness, I don't believe those 3 months are just vacation.

The teams use that time to built a completely new prototype F1 car. (Granted usually a head start has already been made.) Hardly slacking it I'd say.

True, the time is needed to develop (and construct) the new car - so for the engineers and the staff in the factory I can see it as a necessary break from racing. I just get tired of the driver's saying "we can't do that many races". They get 3 months to hit the gym relax.

What about the summer break between Aug 5 and Sept 2???
I know its there to reduce cost, but is one month necessary?
2 weeks normal wait is long enough for our fans, and one month felt like a new season.
how about shorten the break into three weeks and keep the winter break just "long enough" for development and testing.

. I agree, would rather have an empty Turkey than a packed Valencia circuit.

The last 3-4 years at the Turkish GP have produced fantastic races, so it's a real disappointment. But economics are important, I suppose....*sigh*

I just noticed that the Indian GP is scheduled for April 22nd of next year.

They must be insane. Air temperature is well over 100F during the day, and over 80F at night. It can reach 110F during the day at the end of April. The F1 circus is going to roast!!

The calender is still subject to change, but definitely the heat plus humidity is going to be brutal...

I certainly hope so. No humidity though - Delhi is bone dry as it's pretty much desert. Only gets sticky during the monsoons.

The 2012 race schedule that was circulated by Bernie Eccelstone in Hungary is still subject to alterations.

The FIA originally released a provisional 21-race calendar in June, but following concerns from officials and teams, Eccelstone made alterations to the timetable.

The updated schedule sees the season reduced to 20 races with the Turkish GP axed.

In other changes to this year's schedule, the Bahrain GP (which was cancelled this year due to political unrest) moves to November 4 meaning that Australia will once again get the season underway.

While the US GP was originally slated to make it's return in June after the Canadian GP, it has now been pushed back to mid-November due to concerns over the sweltering heat during the American summer.

The traditional summer break has also been extended to five weeks with no race taking place in August.

There will be five back-to-back races: Australia and Malaysia, Belgium and Italy, Japan and Korea, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, and the United States and Brazil.

However, Formula One Teams' Association chairman and McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has confirmed that the schedule will once again be tweaked.

"The calendar is tough," said Whitmarsh.

"But I understand it's going to change again, so until you have the final one there is no point complaining about the provisional one," he added.

Proposed calendar
18 March Australian GP
25 March Malaysian GP
8 April Chinese GP
22 April Indian GP
13 May Spanish GP
27 May Monaco GP
10 June Canada GP
24 June European GP
8 July British GP
22 July German GP
29 July Hungarian GP
2 September Belgian GP
9 September Italian GP
23 September Singapore GP
7 October Japanese GP
14 October Korean GP
28 October Abu Dhabi GP
4 November Bahrain GP
18 November US GP
25 November Brazilian GP

I hope to make it to the Canadian and US races next year. I like how they aren't back to back anymore.

Bahrain GP has been pushed back to November 2012.

Quote:
Bernie Ecclestone has agreed to delay the 2012 Bahrain GP until 3 November in order to give the country more time to recover.

Bahrain was dropped from the 2011 calendar after political unrest resulted in the deaths of several protestors as well as the arrest of many others.

The island kingdom's race is set to return next season with a provisional calendar that was released in June giving the Bahrain GP a March date.

However, Ecclestone has now provisionally delayed the race until 3 November.

"They didn't want it up the front so I've had to screw the whole calendar up," the F1 supremo told the Financial Times.

A spokesman for the Bahrain International Circuit has welcomed the delayed date.

"We are extremely happy to host the grand prix in November," he told the FT.

"Due to high temperatures in our summer, either early or late in the season is better. November is the best month for us."

Does anyone know when the tickets go on sale for 2012? I will be out of the country in September and probably have little access to the internet. I dont want to miss my chance to purchase some good seats in Austin.
