Why is the offset such a heavily guarded secret at DPE? It makes no sense at all not to tell a paying customer what the offset is. That's like buying a house without knowing the square footage and then the seller telling you to measure it yourself. Sure it can be done but it makes the decision to buy so much more difficult. It is one of the main reasons I went with HRE over DPE.

It's not only with DPE that offset is a heavily guarded secret. I've worked with a handful of wheel manufacturers who simply just won't release them. I've brought up the point that hey once my client receives the wheels couldn't they just measure it themselves?

With that said, I will never let myself lose out on a sale simply because offsets weren't released. Like I said, if you absolutely need offsets I will work with you. I will not lose a sale over something so minute.

No you're right. There is a super concave split 5-spoke wheel -- SP-SC5. I've sold them to a few Porsche owners.

Believe it or not the reason offsets are not given out is to keep other wheel manufacturers from getting free R&D on what works for a particular vehicle. We all want deep dish or concave wheels and in sizes that are usually larger in diameter and/or width than stock. So what works, or does not work? What is the offsets and backspacing that will allow the custom wheel to fit? To REALLY look good? If you are a wheel manufacture and do all the leg work and come up with the answers you don't want to "give it away" so to speak. Like mentioned above it becomes a "closely guarded secret". It is also why some wheels may look a little "deeper" or more concave than from one wheel manufacturer to another. Yes you can measure it, but who ever wants to know (the whoever is another wheel comapny they are worried about) then has to buy the wheel(s) to find out.

This same reasoning is behind why many manufacturers of coilovers and aftermarket springs will not list the lbs/in ratings of the springs they developed and sell.

I can understand not making it public information but to deny those specs to the customer who is paying for the wheels doesn't make any sense. Would you buy a car that had no 0-60 specs or no MPG specs and then the salesman told you to measure it yourself?

they could tell me and have me sign an NDA... and if I tell a competitor, then sue the pants off me

In their own way, each side kinda makes sense although I would definitely rather know as a paying customer than be in the dark...

808MGuy...reread my post. Where do you see me DEFENDING what the wheel companies do? I was simply providing information as to WHY they do it. I did not express in anyway, shape, or form whether I agreed with what they do.

I wasn't arguing with you. Just making a point. I know you are not defending them. I mentioned earlier in the thread that I can see not making it public knowledge for the exact reason you stated so I understand that the competition is a factor.
