You shouldn't buy another M if it's totaled, you clearly can't drive or account for your surroundings. Good Luck with your insurance though.

This.

I don't think turning at 15 mph according to OP unless the road is completely made of black ice and you have bald tires on your '11 will cause that severe of a damage. A 328i sounds nice, and looks pretty close. It'll make up for the spike in your insurance cost anyway.

sliding at 15mph? How...unless you stepped on it while you are turning even then with DSC on you will most likely not slide because there won't be power to the wheels.

To answer your question, get the insurance to total the car because even if you get the car fixed your insurance company will still rape you afterwards. Also if the bank still owns the car you will have to have comprehensive insurance coverage in addition to the car payment for a car that nobody will probably want to buy.

Get a less powerful M car and learn to respect the power!

Well no...I turned hard right into side road at about that sort of speed, DSC on, power off, on a slippy surface....the front tyres bit but the back slid round.
15mph does seem a little slow to have caused such a large amount of damage though.

That sucks bad, really bad!

But, if I may ask - can you please find out how much they want for that scapped car?! If it turns out to be valued at 40k and the damage is 26k, that leaves 14k. I will buy that bitch from you today for that. Gimme some S65 man. Please! I don't care how F'd up it is, I bet the thing will still crank over with a breaker bar. It can live to see duty in another car - I believe it.

Unfortunately, no, that won't "buff right out", but please don't scrap it!

So- you mounted the kerb 15mph after the front tyres wiped most of the speed off. and still manager to take the sump out. Hmmm, maybe I'll sell my M3- as it's obviously made of cheese.

I think its worth getting a new car rather than trying to save your money on a heavily repaired one. Chances are the dealer isn't going to fix it back up to like new conditions, so you'd have saved money but driving a car that isn't what it should be anymore. I'd look at it as your wasting the rest of your payments on a damaged car when you could be spending your money on a new car.

BTW, how does that happen? It must've been raining oil that night to have pushed up on the curb like that.

So the dealer says that the engine damage is from the engine running briefly after the accident. Because the oil drained out so quickly after the accident there wasn't much left in the runing engine. They drained my engine and only got a cup and half of oil out of the whole engine and the oil they did get had metal shavings all in it..

^^^ Tell them to haul that shit out to the curb - it is finished. I will be by later to pick it up and give it the proper burial. I promise!

Seriously though man, I feel for ya. I f'ed up my Mustang back in the day and it ended up being totalled out. I did, however, buy it back from the insurance company and sell it off, making a little money on that deal. Just sayin.

yeah, they'll only give you current value of the car if they total it. But that's just how it works man, sorry for your luck. You should consider buying a pre-owned M3 after this.

BTW, any salvagable parts? Would be nice to know where it ends up if you end up totalling it. Hopefully there's still some useful bits in there.

Sid, sorry to hear the news. Where the hell were you in town on gravel? Were you up in the mountains? Hope you get it sorted out soon. What dealer is looking at it for you?

BTW, if you are do go ahead with a new motor for that price see if you can get a stroker...

Dude that is the best idea I have ever heard! It looks the Dinan Stroker engine is the same price as a new S65!

Not sure if their price requires a "core" to start with, it might. Still you should be able to find an S56 somewhere rather than paying rack rates from the BMW parts catalog.

The Dinan is $26k + a core. They list the core charge as $20k.

Since they have to completely teardown, blueprint, and rebuild the engines anyway, just give them the battle-worn S65 for the core.

If you could do that..wow you just salvaged the resale value for your car, a huge chunk of it at least..Cause Id buy your car with a Dinan stroker and a copy of this thread but I wont buy it with another engine in it..

Without access to the engine, no one really knows where it stands. If the oilpan took a hit, it would be nice to see the crank & bearings and make sure the bottom of the block is fine. If the engine looks OK, maybe it could be shipped to Dinan & modded instead of doing a swap as a core. I'm not sure how long their engine build takes, but you'd want to know what work the engine needs after inspection by a local engine builder/machine shop before taking the time to send it to them.
