Found two examples for you:
1st is a good bike for $390 2nd is a VERY good bike for $930 Unless you plan on abusing the bike in rough trails, the 1st should serve you well. The 2nd will hold up to abuse/hard riding much better. |

Haro V4
I picked up a Haro V4 for about $500. My first mountain bike since I was a kid. Hardtail, 4" of travel, disc brakes. The haro's are stronger but also heavy than other bikes. If you're over 200lb. you want that. Also I agree with earlier post, go to a good bike shop and have them fit you to a bike.

My son has a Haro V-20. It is a 20" 7 speed MTB. It was the best little MTB I could find. Trek and Specialized bikes that size had inferior components. It is a very nice bike. I need to get him a 24" now that he is outgrowing it.
