Question Top speed at max rpm

Hey guys,

I need your help/opinion. I drive M3 E92 DCT. For a long time I wanted to check what's the top speed. The results:

Highway (at night):
Speedo: 340 km/h / 8.000 rpm
GPS: 310 km/h / 8.000 rpm

Dyno: 320 km/h / 8.000 rpm

Which is closest to the correct result?
I think dyno, but haven't sure. What's your opinion?

So you have an actual GPS reading from your top speed run...

Exactly. GPS shows true ground speed. You didnt mention if there was any wind.

I would venture to say the GPS is the most accurate.....especially if you held it at top speed for a few seconds.

As another mentioned, wind speed/direction would have an effect though. If you had a bit of a headwind, that could account for the difference between dyno and GPS. Also, the dyno can only simulate wind resistance, etc. In real world conditions, the GPS is going to be the most accurate.

Even using GPS as a "worse case scenario", 192mph is scary-fast. How did you bypass the limiter? If this is a dumb/elementary question, my apologies.

Aren't there issues with pushing 200mph on stock tires?

I'd add some about the GPS - it's Garmin, using in aicraft, so it's good. On the highway wasn't wind and down/up hill.

I gave my car to BMW Dealer's Service and they removed speed limiter, which block acceleration on 270km/h. However, if you have a car under warranty and you take off speed limiter, you'll lost warranty.

200mph on stock tires - never driven on others than the standard, so I'm not able to answer this question. I can only say that with such a high velocity fast clash.

GPS will not be that accurate, in case of an incline/decline. The dyno is the right value. Speedometer shows 4-5% higher speed than the actual speed (regulation in europe so they are not reliable in case you get a speeding ticket)

so 340 KM/hrs X 0.95 = 323 KM/hrs

211 MPH ACTUAL (around 220 MPH indicated) on an M3? In your dreams . By the way, a 6MT would max out (8,400 rpm) at 202 MPH indicated, and a DCT at 212.

Not 220mph. 211mph / 340km/h on speedometer.

I refueling 100-octane fuel, this makes the engine produces more power and tourqe. I have 456HP and 434Nm. I've seen 2 vids with others M3s: G-Power SK-I (525HP) and G-Power SK-II (600HP). Both cars hit top speed like main - speedo: 340 km/h and 8,000 rpm)... Why not 8,400? Error?

OK I'll be a sucker and ask....are you serious? Explain again what you did? Had the rev limiter removed and made a top speed run in 6th gear?

If thats the case 211mph sounds a bit high to me personally. I wouldnt be surprised at 190+ but 211 sounds Lambo/exotic territory to me. I doubt 415hp gets you there but I dont know.

My speedo only goes to 200... Do the EU cars really go to 340?

Either way - How many miles did it take you to reach this speed?

In Europe is 95/98/100 octane fuel - The higher the octane number fuel, the greater power and torque.

7-8km, it's about 5mi

Don't fotget!

Highway (at night):
Speedo: 340 km/h / 8.000 rpm
GPS: 310 km/h / 8.000 rpm

Dyno: 320 km/h / 8.000 rpm

I think, 340km/h is speedo error.

HOLY SMOKES! anything over 270km/h is super fast. I think this car's top speed is around 200 mph - don't think it's accurate if it's anything higher than that.

That video is pretty cool, btw. Testament to engine quality. Can sustain 8000 RPMs for very long periods of time. Surprised people on here were telling me sustained high revs are bad for the engine. What would those people call this then??

I ran the Texas Mile (standing mile) a few month ago and I crossed the line with a reading of about 165 on my speedo and the track clocked me at 157.

Why is everyone going crazy over his Speedo numbers? Of course it is off. Hell my old beater 320i is about 10kph off from about 100kph and after that it and just gets worse. I didn't notice until I put my wife's GPS in the car for a trip and then realized why I was getting flashed from behind often. Now I just drive in the right hand lane. He had a GPS in the car which puts him around 192mph, sounds about right.

Exactly, 165 X 0.95 = 156.75

Again, GPS does NOT take the incline/declie into consideration so it is not so accurate.

Dyno is the most accurate number.

That is the electronically limited top speed. The car's actual top speed, based on it's stock limits, is around 200 MPH, IIRC...

Sorry - The limiter has been removed by ESS and I am talking about one mile - Not five like the OP had.

My comment was only for indicated vs. actual reference.

Yesterday on the A1 (in Germany) I drove a DCT M3 and it was limited to 272 kph or 170 mph. This was even true on a downhill stretch.

And, yes, it was rather fast.

Now I'm sure the speedometer has some error, but we didn't have any way of getting a true ground speed.
