Question Power Button = More Power!?

Does the Power-Button give more power?

Time and time again I've heard it just sharpens the throttle response and doesn't really give more power, I refuse to agree with this statement.

I swear it gives more power;
I went up against my friends stock E60 M5 with Power off and was lagging a foot behind him.
With Power in the Sport+ setting I could easily pass him!
Runs were done consecutively from 0-100 at the same day at the same place.

would a aftermarket tune change this theory of the Power button not outputting more hp & tq

SMG - E60 M5 [all stock]

Thanks - Saeed.

On the first run, was the m3 power off or the m5?

I'd love to know if your friends m5 was with power on as well. Also the power button won't add power but changes throttle and things associated with more air ie timing, furl etc. However the new throttle now allows fir better power throughout the rpm band and not in terms of peak power. Peak will stay the same but everything there under will be more powerful

Probably due to the delay of throttle response. If point X takes 0 sec in power mode, but .5 sec in normal mode, that is a big advantage if he is going WOT.
Point X being 75% of acceleration
Again, no power increase but the mapping can certainly give that impression.

You get 42HP extra with power on.

There's no difference with the power button on or off.

Put it on a dyno and you'll see.

No extra power whichever way you cut it. Just throttle response alone... period... done.

The power button on a stock M3 does nothing except recalibrate throttle sensitivity. On the other hand, an aftermarket software update will often bump HP & torque. This is probably what you're feeling.

Duh - it's the POWER button. Of course it gives you more power.

I suggest you dial it up to eleven...

BMW really shouldn't have called it "power", they should have called it "sport throttle" or something like that

Throttle is more responsive with the power on - not the equivalent of "power" but I could see how it could give the impression of increased power.

According to the instructors at the BMW Performance Center, the M3 gains no added power with the button. In fact, they teach all of their courses with the M Mode switches set to MDM, normal power, and normal EDC setting. They don't like the increased sensitivity of the throttle with the power button on, so that they have greater control over the throttle without it being so touchy.

And before someone suggests they do that to keep the power lower while teaching the class, they set the M5's power switch to on to get the 500 HP.

Of course, when I picked up my M3, the CA told me it gained 100 HP with the button on. When I told him that was the M5 only, he said I was wrong. All I could do is shake my head.

So who you gonna believe, the Performance Center instructors or a half-baked CA?

when you are full throttle, with power OFF, your car is accelerating to its fullest and utilizing all of the power in its power band

when you are full throttle with power ON, your car is also accelerating to its fullest and utilizing all of the power in its power band

when you are at half throttle with power OFF, your car is accelerating at half of its capability

when you are at half throttle with power ON, your car is still accelerating to near 100% therefore it is nearly at full throttle

with power OFF, if you barely tap the gas for a fraction of a second, the car will slight jerk to go with the slight tap of the gas

with power ON, if you barely tap the gas for a fraction of a second, the car will jerk as if you just got rearended by a hummer

HOPE THIS CLEARS IT UP EVERYONE SINCE NONE OF US KNEW THIS ALREADY??!

What... no pictures or charts to go with this?

This explains it about as well as it can be explained. Too bad there are so many rumors to the contrary.
