iPhone charging clarification

I'm really confused as to what the exact issue I'm having and how to solve it regarding the charging of my iPhone 3GS. Currently I'm attempting to use the Apple USB cable plugged into the USB port inside the armrest. I have good and bad days regarding charging. More than 50% of the time I get the "charging not supported" message. I see that I can buy a "charging adapter" yet I'm not sure if that will solve the issue. Could someone please clear the air here. I just need to know what will & will not solve the problem. I DO NOT have a smartphone integration kit.

2011 M3 with Nav.

Thanks in advanced.

What is the build date on your car? Pre-Sept built cars use a BMW supplied Y adapter cable. Post-Sept built cars use the Apple USB cable.

The sticker on the door jamb reads 10/10. If you state that it can use the USB cable that doesn't explain the "charging not supported" message. If I buy the Y-adapter will that solve the issue?

better option is to buy one of the slim 2 Amp chargers
plug in into the outlet in the arm rest
chares way quicker than the OEM USB slow
and never had an issue with the charging not supported
i like this one, dual slots, so you have a spare slot for a passanger phone or navigation etc

Thanks for that link. That looks great as long as I'm not trying to listen to music. I cannot seem to find how many amps the USB port puts out, any idea? It does seem like it charges slowly.

Standard USB spec says 500ma, so I assume its that
Compared to 2000ma for the one I suggested
I'm using a similar one (1 port only) with the blackberry stereo gateway for Bluetooth audio streaming, and I love the combo
