Anything needed to test drive a car?

Hi, I am 20, and my friend(also 20), is planning on purchasing a ~25k car. The choices we are looking at

1) GTI- I love this car : ).
2) Honda Civic Si - He likes the new 2012
3) Mini Cooper S - I also love this car
4) Hyundai Genesis Coupe - why not?
5) maybe a used 128i -> i love my 128i : )

He wants a sports car that is stick, under 25k, and good performance, and will last for a good time as well. This will be his only car his parents help him buy(the other was an old hand me down lexus from 1994ish).

The problem is, are we allowed to test drive the cars at dealerships? He has insurance(under his parents) Is there a certain age requirement?

His parents live in a different city(university), and they will fly over once he has chosen his car(his old car has been fixed like 1000000 times so he is going to cosign with his parents for this new car)

You're good to test drive, and my recommendation is the Genesis. Lots of potential, cheap, great warranty.

You will definitely need a driver's license, but that is normally all they required at the places I have done it. Usually they just make a copy of your license.

You'll be fine, they will just photocopy your drivers license. Dont forget the Mustang V6 has 300hp now. Personally I would get a WRX or GTI.

You are not good to test drive where I live. You have to be at least 21, and you're gonna need your auto insurance card. Trust me, I used to go on test drive sprees all the time.

Hold out for the BRZ STI or... Rocket Bunny FRS. Update: Scratch that. I've got a 2015 5.0/6MT with my name on it.

It really depends on the state, dealer etc.

I used to test drive cars when I was 19. Most places you'll go will want you to be 21 for insurance reasons but occasionally a dealer will waive it if they think you're serious about purchasing a vehicle or the dealer is desperate for a sale.

Depends on how much they want your money and how much you can convince them that you are serious and responsible. It might be best to go in the first time with a parent. If you come back later for a test drive they will usually toss you the keys.

cool guys . Well he definitely has insurance card and drivers license. We are going to act very professional when doing this. We are not just going to test drive for fun, my friend is seriously gonna buy a car xD.

Any recommendations on a sub 25k car?

I like the new volvo C30

As other's stated DL and Ins. card if nothing else find a car online first and call the dealer it's located at. For $25K and from what it sounds like your friend will be keeping this car for a good while so my #1 concern would be the length of warranty or CPO (certified preowned warranty). I'm sure after fixing his current car those many times the last thing his parents want is to purchase a newer car and then have to pay for unexpected mechanical/electrical breakdowns all over again. With that being said don't know about the rest but BMW has one of the best warranties out there when it comes to preowned. Factory warranty is 4yr/50K miles and after that the CPO warranty kicks in which covers you another few years (2 years not 100% sure though) or 100K miles whichever comes first. Hyundai's warranty is also pretty good but from personal experience their cars just suck because of the cheap parts they use to keep price down.
Also when it does break down Hyundai doesn't have loaner cars to offer like BMW does.
Wife and I purchased another BMW for her because of the above reasons. Definitely something for your friend and his parents to consider. Tell your friend to not get caught up on the "newness" of whatever car he test drives but to consider the above factors as well. His parent's pocket book will thank him if not just take him with you next time your 1 goes in for service I'm sure he won't get that treatment at other lesser car brands. Hope this helps!
