Why are 60% of M3s for sale AW?

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds

Is it just me, or is there way more AW M3s for sale than any other color? Is AW just that popular? What is the deal?

I am personally much more interested in Interlagos Blue, LeMans Blue or Silverstone, but those are seemingly very rare.

It's just that popular of a colour, and with good reason!

1. Because the M3 looks fookin great in Alpine White.
2. White is a very commonly loved color - it sells the most.

I think it's also to do with what color BMW advertised as well.
BMW used titanium silver E46M3 in their brochure and many ads. And I believe Titanium silver was most popular color in 01-03.
Maybe E92 M3 is same way since their brochure and BMW uses AW for many of their ads.

It's because AW is a boring color and before long they figure it out in at least a subconscious way and want to get rid of it.

i would only buy an alpine white, or space gray (or frozen gray ) m3.

the downer is that most of the AW m3's have fox red interior, which is much too loud for me.

It's funny that you made this thread, I was thinking the exact same thing.

I just hate that every car on the road is either white or silver. Buying a white car makes you blend in with the rest of them.

I think BMWs look great in white, but that doesn't stop it from being a boring color. Interlagos has much more of a wow effect.

Great responses, guys! Clearly differences of opinions, here, but that's what makes it interesting.

Hah! I wonder about that. I used to own a whte 2003 Infiniti G35 coupe; always thought it looked cool, but there's something about white I just didn't like v. much. Sold it after a year.

I really don't get it, personally, but to each his own.

Totally agree. Interlagos + Competition Pkg + Manual + (Black or Silver Novillo leather) - Nav (don't want it cause I'd use it <5% of the time) is what I'm looking for. Right now, the only way to get close to this appears to buy new because people just don't seem to buy 'em this way.

I hate dark color cars, they show swirl marks, dust and scratches more then white. Plus they are harder to keep looking clean. My boat is even white with yellow, black is hard as hell to keep looking nice out in the sun

That's 90% genius

AW is just THE color for the M3, Space Grey is a close 2nd.

If you've ever taken the time to see all the M3 colors in person, you'll quickly find that red and white are the best looking.

I'm pretty sure that a reasonable percentage of M3's are white, but I think that 60% of M3's on this forum are white, just because people do their research and find that it's the nicest color. The general public doesn't do their research and so they order a broader spectrum of color choices.

Seriously if you're considering blue then you need to see it in person, and then see white and see red because if you have a typical sense of taste then there's a very good chance you'll be disapointed if you buy your blue M3 based on what you think it will look like and don't buy the other colors for the same theoretical oppinion.

Hope that helps.

I agree a dark color is problematic, but I haven't seen the opposite with white. It seems like the best color to keep clean depends on where you live. I live in the Seattle area, so colors that look clean even after they've been driven in rain / drizzle are the best for me. Here are the colors of cars I've owned with a ranking of how good they are at "faking clean" in Seattle:
#1 Sky blue. My '85 RX-7 GSL-SE was unbelievable
#2 Bright blue (like Interlagos). Close to sky, but must be bright.
#3 Seal Grey (911), surprisingly. My Seal Grey '02 996 was amazing
#4 Bright Silver. My current Cayman S
#5 White. My cream-white G35 coupe looked dingy real quick in wet weather
#6 Dark Red. Almost as bad as black.
#7 Black. My 330i. Really bad, but soooo cool when clean

Definitely personal choice. I also find, for me, different cars have different "top colors" which is kinda strange. For example, I don't like blue Caymans but love blue M3s; I love my bright silver Cayman S, but this is not even close to my top M3 color.

I agree with your choice of red, but I am just not into white. I've seen MR, Jerez Black, AW, Interlagos Blue. Haven't seen Space Grey, but if it's like my Seal Grey 911 I bet I'd like it.

Based on previous experience and what I've seen, my top colors for M3s are
#1 - Interlagos Blue
#2 - Lemans Blue
#3 - Melbourne Red
#4 - Space Grey

I realize I'm probably in the minority, based on what I see on the road. It's frustrating when you want to find some used ones, tho'.

I thought the M3 looked best in white until I saw it in person and then I realized it photographs amazing well in white but I now like interlagos blue, silverstone and jerez black way better.

Wow, force your opinion on others much?

I've seen a million alpine BMWs. I would take ANY shade of blue that BMW offers over it.

But ESPECIALLY interlagos.
