Dumb Cop

On the way home from work today I was pulled over by a PG cop for tinted windows (15%). Yes, they are illegal and I do deserve a ticket for it. After he issues me the ticket, I ask him the tint law. His response is 35% on the sides but no tint at all on the rear. None 0 not even 80%. I've only lived in MD for 3 years and really did not know the law. In CA you could spray paint the rear window black and it is legal. I'm thinking that would look stupid as shit but ok whatever. Next, we told me I have 15 days to correct my fix-it ticket.

Now at home, I keep thinking that is the dumbest law - no rear window tint but you could have 35% on the side. I look up the law - it's actually 35% sides and rear. In addition, the fix-it has to be cleared in 10 day.

WTF! Give me the ticket, but at least tell me the correct information.

I'm not legal at 15%. My point is the cop told me the rear could not be tinted at all where in fact it could, just not lower that 35%.

In VA it's 35% rear and rear sides, 50% front sides and no tint on the windshield. Looks stupid having rear windows 35 and front 50 but I've been driving with 35 all around for years and have never been pulled over. It's only when you have any window below 35 that they'll start pulling you over here.

I'm in VA and I applied for a medical waiver to get 35% all around, thanks to my optometrist.

I think with 35% all around the front two windows look lighter due to sunlight coming in the windshield, so it can easily "appear" that you have 50% on the front two and 35% on the rest.

Although I'm sure people get pulled over for speeding or something else and then the cop notices they look very similar and gets his tool out to measure, then issues an additional ticket

sad, but true, VA cops are sticklers about window tint. When i first got my 5, the previous owner had really dark tint. I hadn't even had it a week and i got pulled over. Getting state legal tint was on my "to do" list for later on in the week/weekend. I was southbound on 95 headed to work, state trooper drives past me (about 4 car lengths), then brakes, and slows down so he can get up behind me and pull me over. I guess he thought about it, then decided screw it, pull me over. He pulled out a measuring gun and checked my tint level. Told me to have it changed, bring it to court, and provided a receipt and he'd recommend to the judge to drop it.

OP, sorry the cop didn't have his facts straight, but you had illegal tint so your going to have suck this one up. Usually if you take it to court and show evidence that you are state legal, the judge will drop it. Just show a receipt and pictures of your car w/ legal tint.

if an a hole cop pulls you over its because they are a hole. other than that most cops dont bother they have better things to do unless they dont... LOL

oh in CA. you can only have rear tint no matter how dark it is... but front no tint at all doesnt matter how light it is.

I had a modified STI, rolled around with 20% all around, never had a problem in MD.

SUVs, Trucks and some station wagons come with factory 30% tint - such a dumb law.

This is dependent on where the car is registered, not where you are driving correct? I.e. if I have a VA car that allows more tint than the law in MD (don't know if this is true or not), does the interstate commerce clause protect me?

on my previous fix it ticket for tint I also had 10 days. Also the cop who pulled me over gave me a paper that explained the tint laws. The actual fix it ticket stated on the back that for tint violations you had to go to the mva or state police to get a repair officer or someone like that to check your windows again with the meter. Im not sure about now but back then there was no actual monetary fine. You may have to remove it unlike in Virginia where you can just pay the fine.

If you got a "Safety Equipment Repair Order" then this is what you have to do.

If the defect identified on the SERO is aftermarket window tint, an MSP trooper assigned to the ASED must inspect and test the degree of tint. Contact the ASED office for hours and locations. If the aftermarket window tint is completely removed, however, the vehicle then may be taken to any authorized inspection station or MSP barrack to be inspected.
