White Porsche GT3 photoshoot

Earlier today I had the privilege to shoot a brand new, white GT3. A friend and I combined our gear to include three strobes, soft box, umbrella, etc. I shot handheld while he shot using a tripod, so he was able to get some different views, while I stuck with shots that I could hold steady for longer shutter speeds.

Anyways, tell me what you guys think. I'd appreciate some suggestions to improve my shots. Thanks!

About $9000 for some gigantic ceramic brakes!

I'm not sure which headlight picture I like, so I'm including both.

Next, we decided to shoot an even more expensive, brand new Turbo S. At this point it was getting late, and I decided to part ways. But, I did spend a little time trying different shots with our strobe setup. Man... was it hard to shoot a black car! Needless to say, it didn't quite turn out the way I would've liked.

Thanks for looking!

I don't have a pic of our setup as we kept moving them around. But, I think for that picture, we used an Alien Bees 800 with softbox in the front, then a Nikon speedlight pointing towards the front wheel, and a Canon speedlight towards the rear wheel.

We tried light painting, and regardless of what extra lights we used it didn't show up well.

Thanks man... It was tightly cropped because there was something on the walls... like an elephant fapped on it or something... no idea

1. Not $150k new, you can get um $120k new with good options
2. Would never buy this expensive of a car new unless I was LOADED cuz the depreciation is so big the 1st year. 2-5 yrs old is fine by me.
3. Yes I've been saving - ever since I switched my car insurance to Geico

Yeah... I'm sure your insurance rates won't go up.

That car was sick. I'd have to say the Turbo S sounded better than the GT3 though. The idle was really rough sounding on the GT3, imo. But man was it loud...

just drooled on that Turbo S.

black car shoot = many photos in a dark space with one light (softbox) that you move around for each shot. unless you have access to a giant 20x20.

if that wasn't shot outside, i would have used a lightly-lit background to offset it.

what about a speedlight behind the car shining light on it, wouldn't that help outline the car? I'm sorta trying to learn my way around flashes, so i could be wrong.

Thanks Josh.

Rodi, we tried to do some light painting, but even with some strobes or our softbox, etc it wasn't coming through. If it did show up, it was a lot of work just to get the front side light painted, and it would've taken a long time to do the entire side of the car that way.

We were looking to get the sort of lighting and effect that NVPhotoman did in this photo, but failed miserably. to him for this shot:

well, that would just give you a bunch of point-light sources. not what you want at all. you need a large softbox, large and thin is fine - you just need a large one.

Chewy, do you remember what settings you were using when you tried? do you have a shot of that? i can help see what you did wrong. if ya want.

you're not really light painting, which is as i understand it, capturing the motion of a light-source over a period of time in the photo. this is more like compositing multiple images where each part contains the best lit scenario. it's tricky if you don't understand how it works, so that your the lit areas of all the images line up as if it were one large light source.
