DCT shift knob feedback

Yesterday I was driving on the freeway and a couple times as I accelerated I felt the knob give a small kick and it made a weird sound. I can't associate the sound with anything but the kick was somewhat like when you don't quite get a MT into gear and it grinds a little (but not quite as aggressive). I doubt the DCT knob is connected directly to the drive train but I might be wrong, anyone else ever felt this?

My other idea was that I removed the integrated phone adapter and did not have the rubber cover in the armrest for a few days during which I dropped a chapstick into the void which might be rolling around causing some issues under the center console?

I use the lever 90% of the time when manually shifting and there should be no movement or sound coming from or thru the shifter.

Probably this... Maybe it sounded like more of a rattle than a grind? I don't know, but I use mine from time to time to switch from using the paddles and it has never kicked, moved, or grinded.

My car is still doing this, I don't how to recreate it however except that it happens while driving on the freeway you feel 2 small nudges in the DCT knob and it it makes a sound somewhat like the shift lock click when you start the car. Could something be loose in the shift lock?

I have the exact problem. I had got my car check out by BMW they said nothing it wrong with gear lever. Its just the car is going into gear depending on what you transmission is set to .. I used to have it in level 2, they suggested level 3 to 5 is recommended. 1,2 are for winter mode.

I figure this will fall int eh bucket of, we can't duplicate it so to us there is no problem... It sounds like I'm not the only one with this, I have no idea if anything bad it happening, I figured the knob was just a switch so it's not like it's directly connected to the transmission?

The only weird sound I get from the shift knob is when I get in my garage and put it on N. I get the "normal" Clucking!

It's somewhat like that sound, or the clink when you put your car in gear after you start it. However this happens while driving (usually on freeway) I am thinking something with the shift lock?

I have experienced that as well, but understood it to be "normal" for the DCT.

Probably just normal DCT clunkiness...I guess that is what DCT stands for...Definitely Clunky Transmission.

This happens on my DCT as well though only in 7th when cruising at highway speeds. Appears to function normally so haven't bothered bringing it in...

Well I guess if it's normal I'll just write it off as a non issue. Really not comfortable with the dealer driving my car around all day to tell me they can't duplicate. I'm sure if it's a serious issue, something will give and be producing the issue consistently.

I never felt this and i use the shift knob ill say about 50% of the time.
if it bothers you try to complain and have it checked, if not just move on.
there are a lot of noises and stuff in my car that I just ignore. its part of the car i guess.

I manually shift 90% of the time, using D only on cold starts to let the transmission warm up. I don't feel it during city driving while shifting, only when I get on the interstate cruising at highway speeds. Try it some time. Get up to 75 or so in 7th gear and leave your hand on the shift knob....

But as you point out, so far it is nothing more than a very minor annoyance and not worth bringing the car in by itself. Next time I'm due for service I will mention it.

This is normal. It always happens about the same amount of time after starting the car. For me, about 4 miles down the road. It's always done it. It's very subtle, wouldn't notice it unless you have your hand on the knob. Two clicks about 2 seconds apart. I'm thinking it has something to do with the unit warming up and once it's reached some predetermined temperature, a couple of solenoids operate something. I don't know what, but that's what it feels like. Maybe it has something to do with launch control being enabled after that because that's about how far you need to drive before LC is allowed to happen. Or it could have nothing to do with LC, but my guess it has something to do with how it operates pre warm up vs. post warm up.

When you describe it like that, it sounds normal to me. Is there any vibration/feedback coming through the shifter? Or just a sound?

If it's the latter, I think it is perfectly normal - just the 'clunking' noise from changing gears. I get this sound occasionally with higher shift modes (S4-S5).

Newbie here !! Please bear with me

This forum has a lot of information which is helping me decide my options for my jump to the car of my dreams!! And it seems like that the DCT is kind of plagued with issues ... which seems a lot to me as I tend to keep my cars for an extended period of time.

Have been a manual driver all my life except my current ride which is an auto (2001 330xi). Do you think that these issues will last (not be addressed by BMW)??

There are very few issues and many idiosyncrasies. I have put over 25k miles and over 20 track days and it is the perfect transmission for this car.

i apologize if my first post sounded too critical. These minor issues just make me a bit skeptical though I have been an early adopter or new technologies all my life.

Your point is well taken and much appreciated !!

I've also got 20k and some track days. Also have had no problems. 2 previous BMW's were manuals. I have never regretted for a minute getting DCT. Forums, by their nature, amplify any problems because people only talk about problems. Seems like 6MT has it's share of problems also. But for the most part, the vast majority of DCT and 6MT owners alike have no problems.
The issue in this thread isn't even an issue really, just an idiosynchrasy, like was already mentioned.
