That being said, I'm pretty sure my parents never fed their dog gunpowder or beat him with chains. The other dogs owner was a wealthy woman who my brother was driving to the airport. 2 dogs, 2 bites. I lived with my parents dog for years and he was great most of the time but he would go absolutely bat shit crazy when you would try to leave the house - barking and biting. It is a known issue with the breed, much like the things you described about the Shiba. The cat thing is a born-in trait as they were bred to kill small animals - I don't blame him for that but it can still be a liability when you have cats walking around the neighborhood with loving owners.
Dogs that become possessive is because they are claiming you as their property (you = the owners). Small dogs often exhibit these behaviors because humans treat small dogs differently and humanize them. For example, if a small dog jumped all over a human's lap, it would not be as big a deal to them and they let it slide or think it is cute. The same would not fly if you had a bull mastiff.

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/articles/smalltoydogs.htm

I would not classify it as a Jack Russell Terrier issue, it would still be more of a training issue.

So the breeder took a deposit on the puppy I wanted while I was out of town, even though I explained to her that I would place the deposit for the little guy as soon as I got home. Luckily he has a brother.

I was actually looking at bigger dogs. I really love Rhodesian Ridgebacks, but most are priced out of my budget and are way too far to drive. When I was a kid I always wanted a Shiba and it just so happens that there is a litter which is at the right price, age and is only a couple hours of my home.

New Mexico is a really shitty place to live when looking for a dog. It seems like everything out here is either a Pit, Boxer, or Chihuahua.

If you like Ridgebacks (one of my favorites), how about a Vizsla? They are such beautiful dogs with lots of personality.

This is my friend's vizsla named Joe.

Funny you mention this because I live in CT and my dog came from a breeder in Albuquerque... It's not uncommon to fly a puppy to a perspective owner.

The delivery cost would push the cost of most dogs out of my budget, so I'm limited to looking locally

Ideally, you would want to buy locally so you can visit the puppy multiple times and check out the breeder/breeder's location/etc..

My GF's parents have a 3 years old pit bull. Hands down, he is the nicest, good mannered and gentle dog I have ever seen. His favorite thing to do is to bring your a blanket and be a 100lb lap dog With lots consistent training, pitbulls are one of the best dogs to have. Unless you are a squeaky toy... in this case your life expectancy would be around 5 minutes.

There is HUGE bias against them, because a lot of people fail to raise them right, so they become killing machines.

I am dying to have a dog, but for now I have to resort to pictures of other people's dogs on my phone

Yea, pitbulls are really great dogs. It's just the type of people that have pits here are not the type I would like myself to be associated with. I wish all the cholos here didn't give such a bad reputation to such a great dog.

You have to be a strong leader or else they will walk all over you. Like others have said, they are smart and will figure out what they can and can't get away with. My Shiba is pretty well behaved, but he is an escape artist. He will nudge a door open to get through to the other side. When we walk, and he's being a bastard by tugging and pulling and if I'm frustrated, I may yell at him and he knows that I am not happy by the tone of my voice and will stop pulling and pay more attention to where I am going. Make sure that he understands when you mean business. If you come off as the alpha male, this will naturally happen

The many faces of my Shiba.

Oh yea, forgot to mention that Shibas are not the best with children. Mine tolerates children that are NOT loud, fast, and unpredictable. If they are calm, slow in their motions, he has no problems with them. When the kids become annoying to him, he barks at them as if he is commanding them to act more appropriate. Mine has a loud bark that scares a lot of people because they don't expect it.
