Car Doesn't Want to go into 2nd Gear...

So I was driving tonight with a friend of mine....got the car up to temp like I always do. Once everything was nice and warm I got on the car a bit. I know how bitchy this car is with the 1-2 shift but I missed the 1-2 shift twice in a row which is kinda ridiculous. Got the car up to about 7500rpm at which point I put the clutch in to shift to second, tried to pull the shifter to 2nd gear but it wouldn't go into the gate at all...I thought whatever..car does weird shit all the time... but it happened again a minute later. Driving slower it's not really a problem, but the shifter generally didn't really want to go into the 2nd gate...it was shifting just fine yesterday so I don't really know where this came from....

Any thoughts? If it keeps doing this I'm gonna have to bring it to the dealer...

I had this same problem with my Z4M. Sometimes it wouldn't go into 2nd gear at higher revs (above 6k) as if I mis-shifted, but I clearly remember pushing the clutch all the way in and putting it all the way in gear. I thought this problem was unique to the Z4Ms since they used the same tranny as the 3.0si, but I guess it carried over to the e9x m3s too.

I think it's normal to some degree. It is extremely rare. You just have to tug through harder [to second] before you let the clutch out. My E46 did it too from time to time. It was pretty embarrassing. Noticing it less on E92, but it has happened once so far.

For some reason making a right turn while upshifting to 2nd is a difficult task for some BMW Ms. With my Z4M Coupe you had to hold the stick hard to the left when you man-handled it to 2nd during high rpm shifts to keep from grinding, but I never had issues with getting it in the gate (2nd).

Seems BMW choses some weird character manual gearboxes for their M cars. I've never liked any of them. The lock valve (CDV) didn't help with those so equipped.

First time I test drove a E92 M3 (manual) in 2008 I thought what a POS (about the gearbox). No feeling whatsoever. For sure I would have ordered DCT in my Z4M Coupe if offered. Perhaps I'd still have the car.

I've yet to miss a 1-2 shift (at any rpm). Then again, I'm not shifting as if I were at a drag strip either.

I get the same problem on my 1989 E30 325i 5-speed. Then again, it might because it's 22 years old :P

Ha yes, the infamous 1-2 shift grind.

it can happen when cold or at low rpm or at high rpm, there's no way to know when.

try just shifting around with the stick when your stopped, car running and clutch in. go 1st-2nd-3rd gear play around with those until the 2nd gear catches. it will feel like it's in because as much as you pull in it it won't go in further but you will feel that the shift was too short. the shifter is blocked in the middle of the gate. (that's how the grind happens when we drive.) if the shifter is blocked in the middle of the gate you can pop it out and try again, it usually works, or you can slightly release the clutch and watch the shifter magically go in.

Now I'm no mechanic so I don't know what this means, if anyone on this forum knows, I would love to hear it.

That's probably the problem most are experiencing. This tranny doesn't like to be rushed on that shift. And most I've owned are like that, with Porsche being the exception. We're talking fractions of a second more, so not a big deal at all to me; we just have to live with that idiosyncrasy, like many others. And no way in hell I'd give up a manual transmission for that clunkiness. By the way, I'm about to test my car with Royal Purple tranny oil; hope it minimizes that clunkiness . Take care gang.

I hope you find an answer to your question!

Honestly, this is why I went DCT with the E90 M3 (not that it's perfect). I always thought the 1-2 shift in the E46 M3 was really horrific......like shifting through a block of cartilage and scar tissue......odd description, but that's what it always felt like to me. So.....still better than SMG imo, but not exactly satisfying.

Test driving the E90 M3 with 6MT I felt the 6MT was improved versus that in the E46, but not enough to work for anyone who's been spoiled by truly magnificent 6MT trannies.

I love driving a car with a great manual transmission, but hate driving one with a manual that has issues.......the 335i with the M Sport Pack and 6MT is wonderful, but BMW seems to miss (a bit) with the M manuals for some reason. Why is this the case? It baffles me.

Going from an E46 M3 to a Porsche C2S with 6MT before coming back to the M fold I just couldn't bring myself to go back to an M Manual again.

I want an E90 M3 6MT that shifts like the M's less expensive 335i sibling or better yet.....like even the lowliest of the Porsche family!!

My E46 & E92 M3's both had very notchy shifters. They cannot be rushed. They will get hung up on the gate if you do. This is not a problem as long as you feel your way between gears - I don't know how else to describe it.

It's not like the old muscle car days when you could ram the pistol grip Hurst shifter on the Road Runner from one gear to the next!

Make sure the clutch is all the way to the floor when putting the shifter into 2nd gear. You can pull it out of first while the clutch pedal is being pushed. Just practice with the timing for fast shifts. This tranny reminds me of the Tremmec 3550 that was a popular trans to replace the weak T-5 in 5.0L mustangs.

Sure will buddy. Actually started a thread on the 'drivetrain' section, but was sidelined by the freaking clutch. Don't know what the hell happened with the stupid valve; can't get the pedal to firm up. Might have to do a reverse flush, but need the tool for that. I'm stumped. Did it the first time without issue. Started a separate 'help' thread on that issue also on the 'drivetrain' section, but no help so far . Oh well. Take care.

i think it is not a transmission problem. i have the same situation. most time from 1-2 gear at high rpm, i guess, we should pull more harder on the gear and get the right time right rpm when shifting.
