M6's are more common in SoCal than M3's from what I've seen.

I would charge the M3 and enjoy it all over again.Weight and handling on the M6 is what I can't live with.Not to mention the rear seats are damn near useless for anyone over 5'10''.

Get the M3. The M6 is worst of all worlds. Big yet no room. Powerful yet heavy and not terribly nimble. And the V10 is a mess, a gas and oil pig.

A mess? Are you insane? The V10 in the M5/M6 is FANTASTIC. In fact, the V8 in the E9x is a cut down V10. They're almost exact same engine.

With all of that said, the M6 is ugly as shit. The Bangle butt and the ugly kidney grills kill it for me. The M5 on the other hand is gorgeous.

They're both ugly and I made a mistake of owning an M6 for about a year and 17000 miles. The thing sucked oil like a 72 chevette and gas like a 72 Lincoln. The engine was awful.

Did I say I was surprised? I just stated a negative reality. The oil consumption was a surprise, though. If you like those two things it's a perfect engine for you. I was so much happier stepping into the larger displacement V8 in my CLK63 Black Series.

You don'tknow what youre talking about. Have you ever driven an M6, let alone, been in one? My pops has an 07 M6 and that thing can beast. You gotta turn on Mmode and adjust shifting sensitivity, turn on MDM, etc obviously. and for people who complain about smg, they simply cant drive one. once you know how to drive SMG it is a beast.

Interesting thread. Some of the posts made it easy for me to tell who the bullshitters are and who actually knows what they're talking about.

I think I'll put on my fake poser sunglasses go drive my M6 10 miles home - hopefully it won't run out of gas (full tank) or oil, or fly off the road at the first curve and burn. And hopefully the mess of a V10 will be able to keep up with a stock M3, or even a Prius.

My current car would absolutely kill my former E90 M3 in a straight line. Not even close. From 0-80 might be close, but from 80 up the V10 pulls like a freak. The E9x M3 does handle a lot better, though. No doubt about that. The M6 has a lot of understeer and the M3 has very little. On tight canyon roads the M3 has a big advantage.

I've had to add 1 quart of oil over the past 5,500 miles. My M3 needed a quart roughly every 4500 miles.

I was getting 12.3mpg, and then I added BMCs and RPI scoops. Now I get 12.8. I got 16.5 in the M3. Does anyone seriously want to argue that 16.5mpg is worth bragging about over 12.8? They both get shitty mileage. If you supercharge your M3 your mileage will get worse, too.

About the M5 handling better than the M6 - uh, that would be no. My coworker's 08 M5 handles well enough, about the same. Maybe a little sloppier because the seating position is higher.

Umm... the SMG just flat out sucks IMO, it has a really delayed shift and it becomes very clunky under hard acceleration. And if you want to tell me I never learned how to drive the car in almost two years of ownership I suggest you get back in your daddys car and really pin it. Then come back and tell me just how smooth it is

The shifts are only delayed if you're not in S5 or S6 or if you're shifting at 4,000rpm. When you're in S5 or S6 the closer you are to the redline the faster the shifts are. If you shift at 8k it's like a gunshot. Now if you're talking about automatic mode, yeah it's clunky and jerky as hell. But who other than a retard drives SMG in automatic mode?

I should mention this is upshifts only. When it comes to downshifts the SMG is fast as hell, arguably faster than DCT because there is no prediction involved. I can double/triple or quad click the paddle from 7/6/5/4 to 3rd and instantly get the right gear, no delay because DCT had the wrong gear pre-selected. But yeah, when it comes to upshifting and accelerating the DCT definitely has the game won.

I must of had a lemon then because I was going through a quart every 1000 on my 06 M6. And my dealer kept telling me thats normal. *cough* *bull&%!@*

Unless you were beating the shit out of your car every day that's pretty excessive. Though you're definitely not the only one who has had that happen with the S85. There have been some M3s with pretty high oil consumption, too.

Honestly there is no way you can even compare the SMG to a DCT, and yes I'm talking about "manual mode" all the time. The DCT is on another level

The S85 is a magnificent engine...tied with the N54 for the most International Engine of the Year Awards (regardless of category). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...ne_of_the_Year).

Actually, BMW has the most awards followed by Honda.

Perhaps you missed this part ... "judged by a panel of automobile journalists from around the world"

They lost whatever credibility they may earned when honoring the N54. It's more a marketing success than a fine engine. As memory serves, the motor was producing 228 hp in NA form, then they slap a couple of small turbos on it and gain a whopping 54 hp and all the sudden it's best thing ever (N54's official Hp rating is 282 from BMW although they marketed it as 300 in the US). The successor (N52) put out 255 hp in NA form. So truly BMW only gained 27 Hp above the NA motor they had ready on the shelf and they've been laughing all the way to the bank ever since (except for all the problems the N54 has caused ... one of which is it single-handedly tanked BMW's reliability ratings).

im not here to brag about SMG, im saying if you know how to drive the damn thing, it really doesnt make a difference. but if you cant get it then the SMG is definitely never for you. its clear that the DCT is much smoother newer and more responsive, but thats not to knock off M6 as a car completely. the V10 engine will tear the v8

If you're not tracking the cars, I'd shoot for an M6 without regret. Better looking imo, more presence, more distinctive sounding (by far with meisterchaft pipes), and less common.

Strangely, I do prefer the interior of the M3, and I've driven M6s on a track and they're not that much fun because of how big and heavy they are. The engine is still so much better imo.

I agree with the rest of your post, but I'm going to have to jut in about your comparison to the M5.

From my experience (track), the M5 was the better drive, but only in certain ways. The seats are better (better bolstering, strangely enough) and the steering column is less intrusive. When I adjust the steering wheel so that it's at a proper level and distance (within reach so that elbows are bent slightly even if grabbing the top of the rim), the M6's column will intrude on knee space whereas the M5's is just right. The M5 also felt slightly more natural through corners when traveling at 10/10ths. Throttle adjustment felt more predictable.

With that said, the M6 has a lower seating position, which is better in my opinion, and it's more eager to turn-in.
