Will COBB be making an Accessport for e92 M3?

Since they have dipped into the 335i market, I was wondering if COBB will have a handheld tuner available for the e92 M3?

I would DEFINITELY buy one if it was introduced for ~$1000. Or would the market be too small? I know these are questions I should be asking COBB; and I may depending on responses from this thread. Maybe if enough people chime in interest, they will do something for us? Or maybe someone here is hooked up?

Here are the main features which interest me:

1) No need to send in ECU for tuning

2) Change maps based on new mods you buy, instantly.

3) Conveniently data log sensor values for up to 10 hours

4) Measure 0-60mph time, 60 foot and 1/4 mile ET's, Trap Speed and dyno simulation tool

5) Read engine trouble codes to diagnose issues. Clear them when resolved.

6) Once the AccessPORT is uninstalled, it can be installed on a different vehicle of the same make/model/year. Since the AccessPORT can be uninstalled, combined with the ability to update the AccessPORT firmware via the internet, it retains a high resale value.

Please COBB, DO SOMETHING FOR US!!

it would be very nice to have for the e92, but I most likely feel that it will be awhile seeing they just entered the 335i market

I know Trey personally and can tell you he will not be developing an AccessPort for the e9x M .

Probably not worth it since there isn't that much to be gained from ECU tuning.

Maybe not by turbo engine standards but people are still gaining a good amount of power through a tune.

Besides the cost of entry could be worth it to be able to reflash easily after a dealer locks the ECU, even if it gained 0whp, to run catless or HFC's without a CEL. #1 reason I haven't flashed my car yet is putting the car out of commission for a week and having to go through it all AGAIN if the dealer updates/locks the ECU during a service visit. Being in the midwest 4 hours from a shop that has any kind of experience with modifying M cars, I'd buy one. Plus I have experience with Cobb products from other cars and I'm confident using their stuff.

Powertrip is right, spoke to COBB Tuning & as of now at least, there are no plans. Anyone with HFC or catless would be very interested in this or any other tune.

I do like the ESS tune, and their directflash sounds good. I would have no problem spending $1000-1500 on it if I could uncouple it with my VIN after, and sell it for a bit of a loss to someone else who may need it. However as of this time, I don't think that is possible (correct me if I am wrong). Just have a hard time spending $1-1.5G on it, and then have it be worth 0 the moment I use it. *sigh

I believe the biggest issue is that the M3 unlike the turbo cars have tuner protected software that cannot be accessed with these devices. The ESS direct flash unit I was told can be used on M3's that are supercharged for map switching / updates but only works on NA cars that have not been updated by BMW's latest locked software at this time. I am considering buying one for my supercharger as I would like to have a race gas tune for the track that I can switch to when needed.

Congrats on doing what so many members of this forum are too lazy to do: getting the info directly from the manufacturer .

Cheers

I actually did PM Cobb.

But I thought it would be good to see if anyone else felt the same way regarding the AccessPORT. Maybe if there is enough demand COBB can make a business case.

Powertrip, I have read and taken some of your advice before from the forum, and I do appreciate it. But don't be condescending with me. I am a reasonable guy and I did search the forum to see if there was anything written about COBB on M3Post before starting the thread.

We all share the same interests, so let's enjoy it together.

Since the directflash is available for E60 M5, does that mean they have broken the tunerlocked ECU? Or does it mean the E60 ECU is not locked?

Well with tune & HFC/catless we do gain ~35WHP which to me is substantial.

Along with raised limiter to 8600RPM and a 4.10 diff I don't think I would desire any more power from the car if I were to do that in the future. I have debated going ESS VT1 vs. this route a few times in my head.

Full bolt-on ~405WHP with 4.10 & 8600 RPM limiter vs. ESS VT1 ~460WHP standard diff. Both sound good to me.

I'm pretty sure that Cobb would consider something if they pony'd up the initial development costs... which probably would run in the 200k range. Figure you need to sell 400 of them to break even.

On our dyno, we rarely see full bolt-on, catless cars dyno over 370-380RWHP. The VT1-535 on a otherwise bone stock car is usually around 460RWHP, and easily in the 470-480RWHP range with just a catless X-pipe.

They haven't as of yet though right? I suppose time is an issue as well; since they are spending a great deal of time on N54/N55 right now. Maybe there is a chance in the future, since they have already devoted time into entering the BMW market at least. And more often, people with an interest in getting their cars tuned will be getting the enthusiast oriented models. (ie. ///M, 135i, 335i(s), Z4 35i(s), etc.)

You're right for N/A I should probably estimate the conservative route. Closer to ~380WHP for full bolt-on w/ tune. But I have seen 400+ .
