BMW considering M3 Wagon

Please oh please my fellow Germans, let it happen.

Quote:
We have seen BMW build limited edition runs of the ///M3 in many markets. From the ///M3 “Edition”, to the “Tiger Edition” in China and even the matte grey version for the US, so why not build a “Sportwagon” ///M3? Rumors are floating around that ///M may be toying with this idea and that they had built a tester early on in the E9X development so it is a distinct possibility.

For all of you getting ready to say that there would be too much work required- not really, it would just be the rear quarters of the sheet metal and the rest would be bolt ons (sound familiar?). The real question is if the car would sell. If this limited run of less than a hundred for worldwide sales is even to be formally considered BMW would need to at least break even on the car. This means it would have a fairly significant price premium over other models (our best guess would be around $65k with a full carbon fiber roof). If you factor in the limited numbers, the practicality and performance that is actually significantly less than say even an X5 ///M so while expensive it is not astronomical.

As wagon lovers we are all for an M3 wagon, it would be a way for wagons (at least in the US) to go out with a BANG! and be the answer to the CTS-V, Mercedes and Audi performance wagons that are currently running around with no competition from BMW. Will the market support such a car is an entirely different question and more than likely the answer will be one that we rather not hear. - http://www.bimmerfile.com/2011/01/27...ng-considered/

Not sure I'd buy one, but a touring model M3 would be cool. If I needed more space, I'd take a touring model over a SUV any day.

I just saw that too. Ready to put down a deposit now. Too bad wagons aren't cool enough for the U.S. for the 5 series.

I dont know if there is correlation b/w sedan and wagon sales i.e. i like M3s but I want more space so other than a coupe a sedan would be a natural choice in the absence of a wagon. So hypothetically if available does the wagon then present that much more incentive for BMW to produce this at the end cycle of production. Not sure if I'm sold...

that would be awesome! the cost to develop a wagon shouldn't be too much... Cadillac's break-even on the CTS-V wagon was something ridiculously low like 50 units because they were able to pull a lot of things from the parts bin...

I think they should do it. Since it will weight extra, and the car needs to be re-federalized anyways, they should just throw the GTS engine in it. Oh and also give it ridiculously huge fender flares!

Better a wagon than an M3 Gran Tourismo, if you ask me.

Cadillac needs to sell 37 Vagons to break even on their project.

Yeah, E91 is the wagon.

In any case, why does "BMW would need to at least break even on the car"? With BMW being profitable with E90, E92 & E93 sales, the profitable E9x collective line should more than cover the overall profit margin.

I love the idea of an M3 wagon. Speed, handling, comfort, luxury, and lots of utility in a well balanced and well proportioned, compact package. It's what makes the 3 series such a great car, with the M3 being the ultimate version. Same would apply for a wagon version.

Agreed they could cover the costs but what kind of corporate just does things for no reason. If there is no economic benefit then you'd expect some other benefit to be the reason... I can't really think of what that would be in this situation.
