RE Short Shift Kit Initial Impressions

I've seen a lot of people ask about the various short shift kits available for our E9X M3s and I would like to chime in on my initial impressions on one of the options available.

My Rogue Engineering Short Shift Kit was installed yesterday and here's my initial impressions after the first day:
  • The RE SSK sits noticeably taller compared to stock. It almost seemed too tall at first and still is a tad bit awkward from what I'm used to in a visual sense.
  • Each gate feels extremely well delineated, there is practically no play once the shifter is in gear.
  • Odd gears feels very short. That is, when shifting to gears 1, 3, and 5 you will immediately notice the shortened throw.
  • Even gears do feel shorter than stock but not as drastically as the odd gears.
  • The mechanical "whirling noise" or "spinning noise" is indeed present. The noise is more noticeable at higher RPMs and present from 1st -> 2nd -> 3rd (sometimes). Personally I don't find it annoying or very loud.
  • 1st and 2nd gear is still a tad bit notchy but less so because of the shorter throws.
  • The taller shifter combined with the shorter throws makes shifting much more comfortable and natural.

In general I am very pleased with RE SSK. I wish it was a tad bit lower like the OEM but on the plus side it is much more comfortable and natural to shift. The shifter is now as tall as the center arm rest and shifting to the odd gears is a straight motion instead of downwards. The "whirling noise" is liviable and personally I think it adds more "race car" personality. The shifting is also short enough that the noise comes and goes quick and is NOT present once the car is in gear.

Also a big shout out to Nate@IND and everyone at IND in general for absolutely fabulous customer service

For reference my mods:
RE SSK
Akrapovic Evolution
MS Filter

Please feel free to ask questions or chime in too on you're experiences

Nice where did you have it done? And how much did it run for the kit and the installation?

There's many vendors at the forums that can help with the SSK pricing. I'm not sure if we're allowed to post pricing but if you're really interested PM me and I can give you how much I paid.

I got it installed at Steven's Creek BMW. I honestly paid way too much for the installation, didn't realize you need to take the entire exhaust off to get the installation done but at least I got my micro filter changed and brake lines flushed.

If you're in the Bay area I would suggest talking to Aleks at Alekshop for the installation. He'll give you a much better deal and is really meticulous.

I was thinking about this - it would be a great time to install one when doing an exhaust.

My only concern is with the warranty. I've had an issue with my gearbox where it got stuck in 2nd gear and it was replaced under warranty. I'm just no that confident in these transmissions any more, and I wonder how my dealer would react if I showed up with a broken tranny again, this time with a SSK installed...

It's OK. I have it and like it, however I wouldn't bother doing it again to another car.

I love the RE kit as well! Combined with a shorter and heavier ZCP knob , its perfect! I can't imagine the stock knob/shifter in my M3. Too rubbery and soft to feel like an M3 gearbox!

Its not really worth the money. Would be cool if car came like that from factory. But it's definitely not a mod that's going to make you any better or faster of a driver. If you ever have a problem with your trans you can be sure BMW will use it against you to void warranty. $500 + about 3 hours of labor def not worth it. I'd probably take mine out and sell it if it wasn't so much damn work to get too.

I love my RE SSK as well. Much cleaner feel than stock and that is exactly what I got it for.

The ONE GRIPE I have about it is I wish the throws were a Tad bit Shorter than they are.

Well for starters here's what the Rogue Engineering guys have taken. To be honest it's really hard to tell the difference visually besides the taller shifter. I'll see if I can get a better video but all I have is my cell phone cam.

MNm3, I really wish it was a tad bit shorter too. Better than stock but still not as blissful as shifting the Cayman.

Those of us that drive our cars competitively appreciate the value of a good SSK. I've got the UUC, which IS shorter and somewhat adjustable.
