Coming from a "mediumsauce" Dinan Stage 2 335i and switching to the M3, my only concern - and I hate to bring it but it does matter - is fuel mileage, and by that I really mean cruising range.

I was averaging 21mpg and about 310 miles between fillups in the 335i. My first tank in the M3 only lasted 230 miles, but I was doing a lot of V8 bonding and far more city driving than I typically do. I'm back to my usual commute now (75% highway, 25% city, 16 mile round trip) and hoping to squeeze 275 miles out of this current tankful.

With the 6 speed manual, it's pretty easy to keep revs above 2,000rpm and now that I've adapted to the M3's powerband, I don't find myself thinking the M3 is a step backwards acceleration-wise. Any minor power deficit is more than compensated for by the M3's far superior handling dynamics.

Here's my story for how I got into my M3 that might help you with your decision.

I was in the market to buy a 335 back in 2008. I did all my homework, read every article on the vehicle and test drove every competitive vehicle. I finally went to the dealership to test drive it again before placing my order. Well the sales guy at the dealership said that the 335 was currently out with a customer and asked if I wanted to test drive an M3 for the time being until the 335 came back. How could I say no. Well that was it....the handling, the ride, the sound from the V8, I was hooked. When I got back to the dealership I test drove the 335 which was a fantastic car, but it was no M3. There's just something about the M that is the perfect package. I'm pretty sure that sales person knew exactly what he was doing when he handed me the keys for the M3

Anyway, I went home and wouldnt shut up to my wife about how much I loved the M3. I knew if I went with the 335 a little part of me would always regret not getting the M3. So in order to get the car I wanted I went 6 months without a vehicle (you know how much M drivers love public transit) in order to save for the car I wanted.

Almost two years have gone by since getting my M and every day I'm blessed with starting up that V8 and knowing that I made the right decision. If you go M3 you wont regret it.

Kinda sounds like me. I swapped a lease to get out of my 335i so that 1)id be in the market to purchase another car and 2)increase cash before taking on a slightly higher monthly bill.(not much surprisingly)

I'll be without a car from November 17- February with Euro delivery then till March/april for PCD! This is going to be 1 seriously hard thing for me to do! But you're proof it CAN be done.

Stick with the 335... after driving a friends stage 2, the torque monster had me smiling ear to ear.

Now that being said, taking out the price difference, the comparison is similar to a wrx 265, and a STi... you know you want the STi Same principal applies here lol, its just more exclusive of a vehicle.

there are less owners that track their modified 335s than m3 owners. and there are a lot more 335s.

You mean that HPFP thing that causes a limp mode? Not that I've owned two 335i cars before most of these guys could spell 335i.
