walk around lens?

any suggestions on a cheap but good quality "walk around" lens...18-200, 250, 270? I need it for a couple of days and probably wouldn't be using it often after that. I'm leaning towards the Sigma 18-200...any thoughts?

Just my opinion... but "cheap" and "good quality" usually don't go hand-in-hand. My suggestion is getting a 24-70mm for a great all-day walking around lens.

To be specific, I need it for Disney parade to get some close ups of the characters. I don't want to spend too much money on it because I know it's gonna sit in the bag for the most part. It's just nice to have something to grab just in case I need it.

Here are some taken with a crappy 75-300 non IS that I no longer have...sold it because it sucks in low light situations. I think quality is not bad at all.

and too add to that...a 24-70 would be too limited for me, specially when it's going on a crop body

24-105mm f/4 may be a better choice. I found that 70-200mm in an iteration is too "long".

its a tough choice on a crop - wide or long, because you relay cant get both with quality glass on a crop.

i had a 28-135 which i got a good copy because i would get great sharp shots but i really hated the 28mm because its not wide and i was not going to use my old 18-55 non IS lens. i got a 17-55IS

For a 1.6 crop body I would say 17-40 F4L or 24-70 F2.8L, depending on where you are and what you're shooting.

Tamron also makes a 28-75 F2.8 lens that works very well.

+1 On a crop, this should get you pretty close to the parade action. If you get a slower lense, just stop down to get sharp images. You'll be outside anyways.

I have a 17-35mm f2.8...that's my daily lens. I need one with a long enough zoom to get a close up of the characters without having to swap every minute.

70-200 F4L

Lighter than the 2.8 but still has reach. You can put the 1.4x teleconverter on it, too

L lenses are out of the budget, unfortunately. I'm not baller status like you all are . Besides, it will spend most of it's time in the bag...untouched. I would rent but seeing that I have to rent the whole week and it's going to cost $100 +, I might as well put some on top of it and make it mine

If the L class are out, then go for the 28-135 EF lens or the 55-250 EF-S.

I had a 28-135mm and loved the flexibility it offered except yes, 28mm isn't very wide on a crop.

Right now I have a 16-35 2.8L for walk around and then I just jump to 70-200 f4 if I need zoom. If you can't afford the L's then I'd say you're stuck with either the 17-55mm or 28-135mm. I don't recommend anything like an 18-200mm as the more zoom you put into a lens the lower quality image you usually get out of it. That's at least what I was told.

okay guys...so I went on bought an 18-200mm (it's the range that fits my needs). As I mentioned before, I don't have a lot of use for it and decided that I really don't want to spend too much on it. I ended up with a Tamron 18-200mm and let me tell you...this thing is pretty okay for a cheapo lens. I bought it for $290 - $25 for "black friday" special(bought it on Sunday) and $100 mail in rebate. Total for the lens with taxes was $190.

Images taken with this thing...please disregard composition, I'm still learning. Let me know what you guys think. Any constructive criticism is welcome

Edit: didn't get to use it during the parade...inconsiderate people crowding up the front...even after yelling "sit yo ass down"

I'm biased over Tamron...got the 17-35mm f2.8 and as mentioned above 18-200. so Tamron, Sigma & Tokina are probably going to round up the top 3.

I used to own a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 and it was a great lens.
