Front bumper replacement cost?

Well, I got in my first fender-bender

A M3 convertible with 3 passengers doesn't stop as quickly as I would have liked/expected... there was definitely a slow motion moment where I thought to myself "why isn't it stopping?!" Lesson learned.

Fortunately no one was injured and the airbags didn't deploy. There's some dents and scratches on the bumper, both of the kidney grills are cracked, and one of the points where the bumper attaches near the hood snapped.

I really hope there's no serious damage, what should I look out for? Alignment seems fine, no warning lights have come on. Does the bumper need to be replaced after a minor accident like this? Should I not drive it any more before I get it checked out? I didn't hit *that* hard so I'd be surprised if anything was seriously wrong. See attached photos.

How much can I expect to pay for a new (painted) bumper? I was considering eventually getting an after-market bumper, so maybe I should use this as an opportunity to do that? Is it possible to have insurance pay for the cost of an OEM part but replace it with an aftermarket part and pay the difference out of pocket?

Thanks in advance.

One other question, do all the aftermarket bumpers fit the same kidney grills? I'm planning on buying black or carbon fiber grills to replace the broken one.

I would stay with OEM if I were you.

Just change the kidneys to black. As far as insurance goes -- talk to your adjuster

Sorry about your accident!

I just went through a similar situation when another driver ran through a red light and made contact with the side of my front fascia.

The OEM bumper cover (fascia) itself is $562.87. You will have to work with your insurance company if you want to swap out a different part and most likely pay for any difference.

The total for my accident...just to replace the front fascia, repaint the fascia and repaint the right front fender (had a small scuff in it) was $1400.

If your fender (the plastic beam behind the fascia) is cracked, add another $650 or so.

This stuff adds up quick!

Cheesy9,

If there's no other damage and you're not going to claim it on your insurance, check these guys out: www.bmwmercedesparts.com.

I got a OEM bumper cover from them... great service and price. I had it shipped directly to IND — I think it only took three days from order to delivery.

IND is shaving the reflectors, painting the bumper cover and popping a lip on it for me. You could also have them mold the OEM splitters or a lip of choice and paint the entire piece as another option.

So I think the bracket that snapped was where #4 on that diagram attaches to. Anyone know what part that is? It looked plastic but I'm afraid it's a pretty big and possibly expensive part. I'll try to get a picture later.

Sorry to hear about the accident

This would be a good time to start modifying tho. Why not just get a OEM Euro Bumper from IND and they can paint it and it'll match great. You can also get the new grills that you want from them as well. Since your in a more critical condtion that you really need it, I'm sure they can get one done pretty quick for you

*Edit* Just realized this post was a pretty big bump lol I'm sure its fixed by now

i wouldnt blame the accident on the weight of the passengers. the convertible is roughly 220 kg heavier than the coupe and almost as heavy as an SUV, so obviously it wont brake as well. Next time, keep in mind that you already have 3 extra passangers compared to an M coupe.

anyway, the important thing is that no one is hurt.
