Smile Break-in completed

1191 miles are on the odometer. Tomorrow morning I take her in for the 1200 mile service. This is a moment of change. An inflection point. And I am so excited!

Just wanted to share this bit. You jaded boys have probably forgotten what it's like to drive around in a car that impresses not only without trying, but without even being able to really try. Not that I would. The dweebs in their WRXs are really quite silly, even if they can break 5 seconds in 0-60. It's not about specs. Or drag racing. It's about being in a machine that is truly exceptional. Honestly I can't imagine getting a 550i or X6M or one of the other more expensive BMWs. (Okay, the M6 has turned my head, I admit.)

Am I wrong in saying that this is a supercar? There are supercars that can't match the M3, but are called supercars because they look like wedges on wheels.

Anyway, I'm going to drive my baby to service in the pre-dawn light, and pick up a ferocious goddess of a car later in the day. This moment won't happen again … until I buy another amazing car needing some break-in time. I don't have a journal, so I'm writing this here.

Woohoo!!

Let me explain. It seems like "supercar" is a class determined by looks. The M3 blends in quite well with your normal car, so it doesn't obviously fit with the "supercar" moniker. But there are supercars that don't perform up to M3 specs. What makes them supercars? Having a pointy nose? Italian designers? It's a vague classification at best.

That's what I was saying. I am not kidding myself that my beauty is up to a match with an Enzo or Veyron. But when I hear about "supercars" doing 0-60 in 5 seconds, I can only roll my eyes. It's about flash, not performance.

The definition of a supercar varies and is extremely subjective. I know what you mean and I agree on that front. I'd also like the think that supercars are rare and not mass fabricated...that's one of my definitions that the M3 does not fit in to.

Price is another, hah.

Basically performance-wise it's up there with them, but that's it.

Going back to your original post, because I don't want to start a never-ending debate, it must be a great feeling getting to that mark . A lot more fun from now on!!

"Battle of the super Cars".... Hate to start yet another debate but that is a TERRIBLE show. Tanner Foust and Paul tracy are both highly skilled drivers but niether of them make good TV. (Unless Paul is driving out of a pit lane into oncoming Indy traffic hehe).
There just isnt any comparison to Top Gear or even Fifth gear when Tiff Needle is commentating. Also the "challenges" in Battle of the super cars are just LAME!

SRY!

Note- Congrats on breaking your M3 in. Im kinda in the same boat as you on the "Is the M3 a supercar debate". I'd call the M3 a Sleeper Supercar haha! Because in true outlandish supercar standards it doesn't really hit the mark. But in performance...Well we know thats a different story

I know exactly what you're talking about, and I agree with you. In fact, I prefer to drive my M3 than many supercars. The M3 is no supercar by any means: not in cachet, exclusivity, or price, but definitely close enough in performance, more comfortable, less noisy, has more luggage space, and has one of the best engines in the world. I personally think of the M3 as a supercar because it has the best sounding engine I've ever heard, and I've heard Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Astons, Maseratis... etc. Plus it has all the power I'll ever need. And the beauty is I feel like I have a supercar, but it's a mundane M3, so it didn't cost that much, it's cheap to insure (by comparison), there's a dealer around, and I don't attract any undue attention (I don't have anybody to impress ). No need to spend any more money than this M3; you're not getting any more car for the money. Just something to brag about .

Its a religious experience once you get up into the 5500-8400 rpm range - you will not be disappointed!

The M3 is by no means a supercar IMO. In fact, no ///M car is a supercar.
They are incredible machines, but they def don't fall into the supercar category.

It outperforms many cars out there, but which supercar can it outperform?

Any real supercar, so lets not talk about Aston Martin or Maseratis even for that matter, when I think supercar, its gotta be a Ferrari 360, 430, 458 etc..or a Gallardo, or even a 997TT. And if you put the M3 up against any of those cars, well we all know what will happen.

Not really trying to start a debate, and I actually think it would be a good debate (for another thread).

What would happen? You tell me? On the track, it might be a different matter, but you hardly see those cars on the track. In the real world, they *might* pull away slowly. F360s are most likely slower than our E9X Ms. I attended an Exotic Rally yesterday and I was keeping up with cars flooring it on the highway. Some of them pulled away ever so slightly, but that's it. I was faster than most.

So yeah...two things:

1. Is price the only thing defining a "supercar"?
2. I'm jealous for the OP. I never had the break-in because my car was CPOed at 8K miles.

supercar, schmupercar. Whats the difference? (oh yeah price, exclusivity, i.e breaks alot, no one to fix it, and over 200 mph) that's what i would think, but after this seasons track days am much closer to putting the M in supercar status in performance alone. Quick story as to why it's better than a supercar. Last month at Road America, all sorts of cars, trailers, loads of spare tires. Everyone is at paddock getting ready, trailers, lifts, even an old nascar car and trailer there. In my spot, the floor mats, the baby seat (that i drove up my daughter in) and a gatorade, and could pretty much keep up or pass anybody in my run group (novice) except an r8 and a zr1. After all said in done, put everything back in, threw my daughter in back, put on the heated seats and drove home... Now thats a "Super" car

You're lucky! I have 1,150 or so on the car and called this morning to set up the service. Through five cars with this dealer, I have never had to book more than a day to two out. They tell me earliest available is next Wednesday, another nine days!!! Should have called earlier...

An inflection point!!! Slow down on the melodrama please. I agree with you that the M6 is a head turner. I would trade my M3 for an M6 immediately. I like also your description of the Corvette as wedge on wheels.

Consider another dealer for this service.

Service is done! (So are a mysterious 14 miles. Argh!) Once warmed up, I took her up to 60mph in 2nd. Now that was liberating!

I would but the nearest dealer is almost 90 miles away, part of the joy of living in a third world country!

I can wait nine days rather that taking a day off work or wasting my entire Saturday. Wait till next Wed and I drop it off at 7:30 AM , take my loaner to the office for a couple of hours and pick by midday at the worst...
