Paint Defect: What Would You Do?

Saw this paint blemish on the hood of my brand new M3. There are several other smaller ones, but this one is the worst. Dealer had bodyshop attempt to fix it, but now it has a swirl mark. The swirl is under the clear coat. Advice on what you guys would do. Take a cash "adjustment" to the car or get a new car.

Personally, I just ordered my first BMW, first M3. I would want everything to be perfect. I'd want a new order, even if it took another 2 months. Especially for $65k. $1500 is certainly not enough, also consider if you are ever going sell it down the road. Buyers or dealers during a trade-in would probably use that imperfection against the final $$.

Yikes, that looks awful. I would tell them get me a new one. Not acceptable at all

I'd ask for a full respray on the hood or a new pre-painted hood from the factory.

to me, it would certainly not be worth waiting another 2 months. that's a bummer that it happened to you, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. have them fix it properly and enjoy the car.

My car has five or six similar defects in the paint. I did not notice them when I picked up the car last February but I have started to notice them more and more during the regular washes and details I do on my car.

Even though they are small, they do bother me and I don't think a car in this price range should have paint defects like this. If I had noticed them when I took delivery I probably would have made a stink about it and asked for a price adjustment like you mentioned. If the dealer is willing to replace the car I would definitely accept the offer and get a new one.

I wouldn't want the dealer to attempt to fix because I am sure they would have messed it up like they have in your case.

I would refuse to take it and insist on a new car. If this hood gets repainted everyone will think the car was in a bad accident.

Sorry, but new factory paint can not be replicated by a body shop. It is simply not the same and can age differently over time. A body shop will not use the same water based paint and baked on clear coat. Just not possible except at the factory.

So, new car it is.

Why not just a new hood painted at the factory?

I'd order a new car for sure.

The paint would be a close match but not perfect. Every batch of paint is just slightly different. This option would be my second choice (I wouldn't even consider the "price adjustment" option) but if it were me, I'd start over and order another car.

I have a paint defect as well but its nothing as bad as that. I would definitely take the car back or get compensation.

I doubt you are going to get a new car from this. The problem is "Dealer had bodyshop attempt to fix it." Dealer bodyshops are usually full of morons who couldn't fix a wheelbarrow. Take it to a reputable body shop who knows what they're doing, bill the dealer.

The guys that are saying "new car" are smoking serious crack.

Why? The car is fine.

Do you people like creating more problems than you already have?? Makes absolutely no sense. Why go through the hassle of trying to get a new car?? Totally unnecessary.

Have them give you a brand new hood. Over.

Enjoy your car, it's just car, piece of steel on wheels.

Look. The BMW factory paint CAN be replicated as they use unbelievably precise measurements and QC at the factory. At the factory tour, they were proud of the fact that any differences in paint batches were indistinguishable to the human eye, although their computer could tell. I'd just have them order you a hood from the factory and be done with it. Not a big deal, although I understand why you are frustrated.

Thanks for the suggestion. Dealer says no way, no how, no chance of ordering a prepainted hood. Never been done, no process for it. They will send a primed hood to be painted locally. If you have been able to order a prepainted part from your dealer, please pm the name and contact info.

If the manufacturers were smart they would offer this service and people would pay a premium for an oem paint job for bumpers, fenders and hoods.

Probably has something to do with the assembly line nature of the build process. May not be possible to interrupt the process to paint one hood.
