Switch to Winter Tires

When do you make the switch? I've usually done it during the weekend when daylight savings time ends. Curious about others' thoughts/practices.

Have you driven your M3 in thru a Chicago winter? I'm from Cleveland Oh and I plan on storing mine during the winter. Even with snow tires I couldn't imagine driving an M3 in the kind of conditions we get during our winters.

It's fine with snows. I used to live in Cleveland, now in ski country. We get 4 feet plus here and 700 inches plus in the mountains. As long as you aren't plowing, you're fine.

Last year it snowed here early October and I switched then. This year, the snow set is still sitting on the side of the garage. Probably switching this weekend though since snow is predicted middle of next week. The RE-11s I'm on now have been surprisingly good on the colder mornings, not nearly as crunchy as the PS2s I was on last year.

Drive the M all winter long in Chicago. Works great in the snow. I can do regular speeds while the FWD all season tire folks are driving slow.

Winter tires start to wear rapidly at temperatures above 7 degrees celcius.
Summer tires harden and lose grip around that point too but will be fine until about 3C (where freezing starts) as you have to worry about ice/snow.

There's a period where it's a bit above during the days and gets cool at nights- that's the point to change it (unless it's short term).

As stated above, you should base your decision on temperature. When the temps are consistently below 45 degrees is my rule of thumb. I've driven an e90 M3 in winter conditions that would scare someone from Buffalo NY. It's fine as long as you have good winter tires and enough ground clearance.

I switched mine at the end of October. Temps were consistently 5-7 deg celcius. My summer tires were getting REALLY hard and uncomfortable and I could feel slippage on acceleration/cornering. Also, I didn't want to risk getting caught in bad weather and having to leave the car somewhere.

Did it today as we got a little snow this morning.
Since I switched them myself ( devoted rims) I wanted to do it before it got too cold outside in my driveway.....
