Noises on start up, are these normal?

I've done some searching around this site and found some vid/sound clips but nothing that sounds like this issue.

My car is a preowned 2009 e93 with 23,000 miles. I'm new to the V8 although I had a e46M3, it just doesnt sound right on start up for the first minute or so. This even happens on warm starts but after a minute it goes away...

I stopped by a dealer and I could tell the SA didn't know WTF he was talking about but he was trying to convince me its normal. It's louder than it sounds on the video, and it's kinda freaking me out. What are your thoughts?

The noise is the air injection pump that helps the cats warm up quickly to pass cold start emissions testing. It is vicious now that I installed the full AA catless exhaust system.

It's the exhaust... It mentions it in the manual. I believe the computer runs the engine very lean on startup to heat up the cats. I actually wish it sounded like that all the time!

My 2011 is EXACTLY the same!

It seems to be in three (3) stages.

Starts off loud, then calms down a bit, and then idles normal.

Agree with everyone here.

My M3 and the M6 does the same thing. Sounds like a diesel engine for the first few minutes!

If you think that's loud you should hear the M6....

Yes, when I started my car for the first time with 1 KM on it at the Welt. I had to look at the delivery guy to see if the sound was normal. Glad we have this forum.

Perfectly normal. In fact, probably quieter than most I've heard, which have a bit more valvetrain noise. These engines sound weird under load, especially at start-up due to the cat warming cycle; almost like if there was an exhaust leak. And wait until it gets colder; it'll sound much louder .

I agree with the others and mine sounds exactly the same.

I actually look forward to hearing that raw sound echo in my garage each morning. It reminds me that this high-revving, ass-kicking machine is getting ready to do its thing.

OK...here is the real deal. This very intoxicating noise is coming from the exhaust headers due to the rich fuel environment delivered to a cold engine.

Mine sounds the same; lately though, the idle at cold start is very unstable for the first 20 seconds, after which stabilize.

What could be the problem? No errors on the display...

Sounds pretty normal to me, just like mine for the first 30 seconds after a cold start.

Yes, I feel the same, after it was clear that this is normal. Remembers me on my former drive, an Alpina Roadster S.

During cold start it also sounds like...fun I miss it a bit... --> Click the picture!

I use it as a timer to let the engine warm up a bit before I start off.

Add Eisenmann Race for even more fun! Like JJM, I used it as a timer, pull out of garage, watch door close, get belts, etc. and let it warm up the 45-75 seconds it takes to mellow a bit.

My neighbor has expressed both his pleasure and displeasure with this, but acknowledges both so we're good!
