Car telling it's ready for service, only 600 miles

Question on initial service. Only have 630 miles on the car and today I get the service notification message from the car. My understanding was there was an initial service at 1,200 miles. What gives?

I have been sticking to the proper break-in procedures and have not topped 5,500 rpm, though it's been close on a couple of occasions...

first service is due at 1,200. Maybe you had a couple long drives or other attributes that makes the car think you will hit 1,200 miles soon. I think I got my notice at 8-900 miles.

Almost exclusively city miles, nothing more than an occasional 3-5 mile stretch on our local interstate. Just curious if I should try and stretch it out to something closer to the 1,200 mile number. And the car did notify the dealer so I got a call midday today to make an appt though I told them I would call back...

I got my notice at around 600 miles too. The SA said that was the notice to schedule the appt. I did the sevice at 1200 like it says. When they read the key it said 0 miles overdue.

Make sure they do not change the DCT fluid. Diff and oil only, plus the recall for the new DCT software.

Thanks for the reminder! My car was a Sept build so hopefully I got the new DCT software either at the factory or at the VPC before delivery.

Normal. Mine indicated at the first startup after passing 600 miles.

mine called for it at 917miles (that was 0 miles overdue)...almost entirely city driving, it's based off of how many gallons of gas your burn. So for me it took the same amount of gas to drive 917 miles as most people take to do 1200, since there were no highway miles at all during that time period.

Thanks guys, sounds like my warning is normal! I will take my time and get it done closer to the suggested 1,200 mile mark...

The DCT oil is for life, I doubt the dealer will even consider it.

Make sure you read the actual message about the service. My warning kept coming up too, but it simply said to schedule the appointment soon, not that my service was actually due. My actual service was due at like 1180 miles or something like that, I took it in a little over that because I couldn't bring the car in and needed to drive it for a few more days. No big deal, just get it done when you can.

Other than for time/scheduling reason, I'm curious why you would wait to have the oil changed later rather than sooner. Just seems like if the car is indeed saying it's time for an oil change, it's automatically contacting bmw to schedule it, and the service center is honoring the early change, why not just get it done and avoid the risk?
