E92 - M3 mule encounter on Melrose... (gotta love LA)

As if there aren't a million better pictures than these out there of this car... but, here's my story...

As I was pulling out of work @ Paramount Studios last night, this car was heading West on Melrose and as I saw the front and the rockers, my first thought was... "Wow... someone really f---ed up their E92 already!" But as it passed and I heard it and I saw the quad pipes... I realized what it was... The highly anticipated E92 M3... albeit in cloak form.

So, of course I quickly disconnected the bluetooth call I was on, making my camera phone available and pulled up next to him @ the next light. I looked over, gave him the thumbs up. I got a smile back, the light changed and we were off... both smoothly silking away from the line as lackadaizically as two people in two nice BMW's can... until the next light when I looked over and noticed HIS window down now and with HIM trying to get MY attention... it was as if he had just noticed I was in a shiny new freshly tinted E92 with M5 wheels... He said how much he liked mine and how many he had driven and how fast he thought they were. I of course asked him what he thought of his and without hesitation, as if he was well trained for his answer, he responded "It's nice." We exchanged more friendly comments at the next several lights before I had to finally peel off @ Fairfax and say goodbye. We exchanged smiles, hand waves and honks.

The long and short of it is... nice guy in a nice car! AND, like everyone else, I can't wait for the new M3.

Some of the conversation we had:

"So, there it is, huh? ...what we've all been waiting for."
He smiled...
I said, "What, a year? Year and a half?"
He said, "That's what they're saying."
Then I asked "So... how is it?"
That's when he smiled again and responded with "It's nice."

Another thread has a poll on this "first arrival" time.
Though it's just a guess, my vote went to September.

Nice story.

Question for you, so after all those 3er's you've owned, only one M3 and it was back in '89?!?!?!?

Hope you'll be getting the E92.

Hey there Spencer -

Well, the car was an '89, but I got it in '96... but yeah... that was the only M'er I've had. Yeah, I came close on one of the late e36's, then quite recently on the e46, but never ended up pulling the trigger. Most recently of course I ended up going with the e92 335 while like all of you, I wait. I have to say though... for any of you who own or have at least driven one... it's more than satisfactory in the meantime.

Thanks you guys...

No, the wheels were aftermarket 19" M5 replicas I put on right after I got it, however ironically, they're about 1-2 pounds lighter than the stock 18" type-189's that came on it. I think because they're the italian replicas (vs the taiwanise (sp?) ones that aren't 100% accurate) that they look as good as they do. Still contemplating a small drop... we'll see.

As for the color combo... I saw a similar combo on an e46 M3 at the dealer in about 2003 or so... fell in love with it and decided to custom order this one emulating that specific e46. The only difference is the grey poplar wood trim inside... it's almost black and I think looks really good.

As for the window trim... the aluminum is killing me... I have to black it out somehow as I think although it is very nice, it really detracts from the lines and somehow overwhelms the car making it look top heavy.

Still waiting on the forthcoming Dinan suspension components... but everything else is coming together nicely in the meantime...

Thanks again for the kind words...

oldkingdom -

That is so awesome you got to see the new M3. I haven't been on the boards lately, but I ordered the 2007 M3 (as it was rumored to be at the time) back in 2003 and I am still waiting and waiting.

Now with all this talk of the 335i and the EXEDE/Vishnu tuning making such ridiculous power I am thinking of just getting the 335i and throwing on the aero kit. It will definitely be nearly as fast and probably get 50% better gase mileage than the next M3 anyway...

Need to ask you about your wheels. Where did you order them and what are the exact specs of your tires? Amazing combo bro. Looks fantastic!

Hey SilverTT -

As for your M3 thoughts... I have the exact same opinion as of today with the car looking as it does... I love how it drives and I love how it looks and sounds. There are a few things I still want to do. First and foremost are shadowline and Vishnu, of course. As soon as the M5 style bumper comes out for the coupe, I'll put that on as well as the decklid lip spoiler... and I'll continue to be completely satisfied. That being said... I KNOW as soon as the M3's hit, dealers are going to be getting minimum of $10K over (at least in my neck of the woods) so a $65K car will become $75 and as much as I'll want one immediately... From a financial standpoint, I'll simply have to wait a bit. So why not own an awesome car that's the closest thing in the meantime. I'll definitely get the M3... just not sure when it'll be feasable.

Anyway... back to your question... the wheels came from a local wheel shop here in Los Angeles, but they're the more accurate italian M5 type reps... the ones WITHOUT the little lip around the edge. They fade out to the tire line just like the actual M5 wheels. Anyway, they're 8.5x19 and 9.5x19 wearing 235/35's up front and 275/30's in the rear. It's a nice set up. I like it anyway. I have to say though... it looks way better and more "settled" in person than it does in the pics I posted. I'm not gonna play... it's no e92 M3, but it's damn good.
