January CAR magazine checks in w/some info

Title of the article: 5 secrets of the new BMW M3

1. V8, 4.4 liters, 425 bhp. Engine based on M5 V10. 4.6 sec 0-60.

2. Initially will be offered with SMG or 6 MT, later w/DSG (under development)

3. Coupe and sedan to have very different appearance (coupe almost switched to M4 designation, but marketing gurus protested).

4. CSL version also forthcoming (lots of carbon fiber, maybe no rear seats)

5. No convertible, but maybe a wagon, due to new 3 series heavy hard top convertible.

I think the engine will be less then 4.4 BMW prides itself on more then 100hp/liter and they wont change. Current M3, M5, M6 are 100hp/liter + .

No way BMW will drop the 100hp/litre trademark. Also I think they are sticking to the 0.5L per cylinder principle for the M cars.

Absolutely correct!

I6 E46 M3, Z4 M = 343hp/3.2L = 107.2hp/L
V10 M5, M6 = 507hp/5.0L = 101.4hp/L

So we can with 100% probability expect new M3 to come with: 4.0L V8 405-430hp.

except for the american E36 M3, 3.0 or 3.2 liters with 240 hp (europe did get 100hp/liter)
E30 M3 didn't hit 100hp/liter either

My guess is 4.0 liter with 425-450 hp..

And the M5 is 0-60 in 4.0 in all the mags i have seen...

So the m3 should be a little quicker i think...

Yep I'm aware of that. The 100hp/litre trademark started with the S50B32, which was also BMW's first double-VANO (now another M trademark) engine.

Technically, BMW Motorsport's first 100/litre engine was the McLaren F1's S70/3, which was basically two S50B30s as found in the Euro E36 M3 3.0.

450? Not likely. Gotta keep some distance from the M5's 500hp. Not to mention a 150hp/litre V8's life spun is probably counted in hours.

Interestingly, instead of HP/liter, the magazine lists HP/ton

Ford Focus - 159 bhp
E30 M3 - 162 bhp
E36 M3 - 188 bhp
E46 M3 - 218 bhp
MB C55 - 228 bhp
Audi RS4 - 248 bhp
E90 M3 - 264 bhp
M6 - 284 bhp
Ferrari F430 - 338 bhp
Ferrari Enzo - 484 bhp
Bugatti Veyron - 506 bhp

I think its fairly well known that BMW V8s are quite strong engines. Now the V8 (especially derived from the new V10 platform) will be especially able to handle high revs for excessive amounts of time. I think in this case, it boils down to a question of marketing and if BMW cares about bringing the power (and torque, this is a V8 afterall) close to that of the M5.

I think with a 4.0L V8 in the M3, they could easily bring it to about 425-430HP. Then there is talk of using the turbo technology recently being employed by BMW across their engine range onto the M cars. These turbos are primarily intended to improve acceleration to bring the engines up on rev in the low ranges, but they would have an effect on top end power too theoretically, maybee bringing the car up to 450HP. Now does BMW want to sell an M3 with 450HP next to an M5 with 500HP. My head (pure speculation) says NO. So the car will stay at 420HP which gives it a decent difference from the M5 but still gives M3 buyers the ever important "value" card. What I mean is that M3 owners can still say "I get more per dollar then with an M5", which believe it or not still counts with alot of regular car buyers.

No question this is the most important factor here. I mean the engine can make 200hp/Litre from a 2.0litre engine, but if the car weighs 4000lbs, whats the use? The fact that the RS4 is listed as being 248bhp and E90M3 @ 264hp, already gets me excited about this car. Then factor in the fact that BMW drivetrains are the most efficient in the industry right now, means that bmw is giving us an Rs4 killer on a silver platter.
