Rough Engine when starting, 2011 E90 M3

Hey guys---noticed something odd in the past month or so. When I start the car and drive (I've got a 2011 E90 M3, DCT) the car always took a while to warm up, but now I notice a lurching of the car for the first 1 minute or so. When it does the tachy needle bobs up and down. I didn't think this was normal but haven't had a chance to make it to the dealer yet.

Any thoughts?

Not normal, some have had this issue related to the idle control valve; I've had it and a bottle of techron cleared it up. More will chime in though, there are some posts here with videos within.

mine lurches (in 1st gear) and rpm bobs a little (1st, N, Reverse) in 1st minute upon cold or "lukewarm" start..both ESS and BPM tune irons it out completely. Also, make sure air filter is not clogged w/ dirt or debris.

I've had similar stuff going on since I got mine, where the tach "bounces" up and down a little. For me it's just for about 10 (maybe 15) seconds or so when I start it up. If I've had an active week, with some extra fun driving it doesn't seem to happen too much.

I've been curious to get an answer to this question so I'm glad you brought it up. I have an 09 E92, DCT with about 45K miles. I might try a bottle of Techron as mentioned above. I hope it's not anything serious, wouldn't imagine since it lasts so short and does not seem to affect the car really. I also remember reading somewhere in the instruction manual about how it is considered normal that the car runs "uneven" (I cant remember what term they actually used) during the warmup stage, but at idling as well as the first couple of miles with driving. Any more info on the idle control valve mentioned above?

Mine has trouble in 2nd gear at slow speeds when its not up to temp. Lurching and jerky. I dont have the idle bob. I think it has to do with the cold start cycle where the timing is retarded. Once the cold start cycle is done, I dont have the jerking issues. Also, it may be a combination of low torque, low speed and the cold start. Its a little embarassing if people are around and I dont catch it by putting the clutch in....looks like I cant drive a stick!

OP, I had the same problem just a few months ago. Dealer went into fault memory, found ICV for bank 2 threw a fault some time ago, replaced it.

Got the car back a day later, still had the same problem. Cold start, start the idle bob by tapping the throttle 2/3 times, and replicate idle bob.

Took it back in, dealer went into fault memory and found a Coolant Temp Sensor was bad, and thats why it was giving me rough starts in the morning. Thats the first I heard of a temp sensor giving rough idles, but sure enough, the idle bob went away on cold starts after replacement.

I never have this issue when the car is cold but it happens all the time if it's lukewarm.

I'll go from work to the gym. Park it for 90 minutes and when I start it up the idle bobs between 500 and maybe 1200. That lasts less than 30 seconds and then all is well.

Never even though to mention it to my SA since it's never lasted longer than it takes me to get my belt on and turn on the radio.

Hey guys--took the car to the dealer a few days ago. I couldn't entirely make sense of the service report, but it mentioned the idle control valve several times.

The problem disappeared for the past 4-5 days. Today, when starting the car, it was still in park and the handbrake was on while I was returning a text.

I looked up and saw the tachometer needle bob up and down pretty quickly between 5 and 600 RPMs and then when driving the car for the first 10 seconds it seemed very lurchy. Then that sensation disappeared within 10-15 seconds and was replaced by the usual cold engine noise.

I was going to take it back. Any thoughts? When I first bough the car almost two years ago, it never did this, so it can't be normal?

I would still 'trow a bottle of techron concentrate plus in the tank, can't hurt; at the same time you can do some research.

Yeah! Shit I was looking for that original vid on youtube. Both my E86M and my E90M had this happen, techron worked, so I chalked it up to bad gas and haven't bought gas from that chevron since. Cheap and worth a shot.

Hey all---so that rough idle problem still happens. It's pretty much what this youtube video shows:

I took it to the dealer today and the service report says this:

"Replace Idle Actuator" Then it has part numbers for : Idle control device, clamp, and hose clamp
.
I started the car again today around 4:30 pm (car was sitting in the parking deck from 9:30 AM-4:30pm) and the same issue happens. It's not affecting the way the car is driving but doesn't seem normal.
.
Any other thoughts? My warranty isn't up until 12/15 but still want to know why this is happening.

I just ordered a bottle of this. Put a tank of BP in my car the other day and instantly had a rough idle after staring the car. Now it's there every cold start. Gonna drop this in with a fresh tank of Chevron.

its weird---the needle bobbing up and down doesn't seem to affect the way the car drives...just wondering if that's a sign of an issue that's about to happen? I've taken it to the dealer a few times about this and they've replaced the idle control valve and now the idle actuator.

I'd be curious to know. It seems I have one shitty station that has given me two bad tanks, so I stopped going there, and it was a chevron.

Idle control valve is most likely the culprit.. But I've seen some dealers tell people it's normal..

Mike---weird thing is my dealer happily replaced it; but i still have the same issue. the car drives perfectly normal; but the 2nd cold start of the day (after its been in the parking deck for ~7 hours) is what results in that idle surge.

Not good. It's likely idle air control valve issue. If you let it persist, car will not hold idle unless you have foot on gas all the time rendering your car inoperable, especially with DCT
