No more IRL NA 2.4L V8. Now 2.4L 6-cyl turbo.

Just read this on R&T. And starts in 2012 with a new Dallara chassis. I'm not watching it anymore. Everybody is going the freaking turbo route now, even racing . Supposedly because the IRL wanted the car to look 'different', without the NA airbox 'hump' above the driver. I only watched Indy 500, to be honest, and wanted to attend one of these years, but am not interested anymore. How about you?

Why? turbo is where they should be. Its what CART was before they killed it. I think its going to be a very bright future for IRL.

They're having a spec chassis with teams able to develop their own aero packages for the cars as well as having engine competition. Whats not to like?

THE TURBO part . Personal preference. I just don't like any form of force induction: not how it sounds, not how it drives, and not the heat it generates (and its consequences in the long term), especially in hot weather (where I live). And yes, most manufacturers are going that direction, but I won't buy such a car until I have no other choice. Much rather drive an NA V8 Vette (even if archaic in technology) than a FI 6-cyl M3 (or even an FI V8), but that's just me.

Powerwise, Honda is the only manufacturer lined up, but supposedly others could enter as well. And whoever makes the aero package can put their name on the car, which is nice.

Not a word on rev limit; only on power: 550 to 700 HP depending on track. Might watch it once out of curiosity, but that's about it. Good day gang.

I'm also a big fan of NA engines. Why I'm going to keep my M3 for so long. However, when F1 had turbo's is wasn't worse off by any means. But they also were hitting 1200 HP back then. If the HP is limited, I could see it going backwards. I think that is a mistake.

How do the 500-700 range compare to where it is at now? I don't follow IRL much.

I'll also add, that F1 is presumably going to FI 1.6L 4bangers in 2013. Though probably with a higher HP target if it is even restricted at all.

Pretty much the same man: 650 to 700 HP. Guess it must be cheaper to build. Plus IRL also wants the cars to look different (without the upper intake). Weird. And I made a mistake on my title; engine size is 3.5L DOHC V8, with a 10,300 rpm limit. The 2.4L V8 is on F1s, obviously.

And talking about F1, down to 1.6L turbo 4-bangers? Doesn't sound like a 'premier' F1 engine anymore . They will sound like motorcycles now, but with a flat crank (I don't like too much how they sound), shouldn't sound that different. I just don't think that engine belongs to the premier F1 racing series IMO. NA engines are disappearing faster than I thought . Oh well. Thanks for the info man ; hope you had a great weekend.

i completely understand where you're coming from, i was thoroughly into all-motor only on the past few cars i've had (bmw and a couple of hondas). after driving a twin turbo bmw, however, i slowly came around to the dark side and hope that more and more mfgs offer turbocharged cars in the coming years. it'll happen to you, too

I don't understand why the OP cares whether the engine is NA or FI as long as the racing is good. He's not driving the cars to feel the difference. As long as the "sport" aspect is good it will be fun to watch.

I only watch Indy 500 from the IRL series, and that's because I like how the engines sound . And no, I don't drive those cars, but what the heck is your point: Good racing? Dirt bikes have pretty good racing, but I don't like it, and don't watch it. And I'm a bike guy. I didn't buy my M3 because I needed the power; bought it because of the engine, and how it drives. There're a ton of cars more practical, reliable, and efficient, but wanted THAT one. Don't ask me to justify it because I can't. You get my point.

And talking about the 'sport' aspect, if F1 reinstates team orders (imagine how bad it'll be if it becomes official?), I'll probably stop watching it. I'm sure I can find more productive things to do with that time . Good day.

Personally, I quit watching/following back when most of the top drivers/teams quit what? 15 years ago?
Maybe this will make it interesting enough to come back to watching them.
